When entering the USA, I always present myself as an American and use a US passport. This is strongly recommended (and some will argue that it is mandatory).

When entering Canada, I use my Canadian passport.

When entering another country other than the above, I use my Canadian passport unless I left from the USA. Then I use my US passport.

Such useful information. Thank you so much!

Hello, I have the following questions:

If my PR card expires next year, can I apply for the new card now?

If I fly back home and return with my PR card being expired (since the residency is always with me, does it matter)?

I am not very lucky with having many jobs here, so if I come back next year to Canada and apply for a new PR card, do I understand correctly that I most likely won't be able to enter the country without a valid card?

Also, another question - if I have serious family reasons etc and I reapply for it let's say in a very long period of time,

when is it going to expire? You can renew up to 9 months before the expiry date.

How do you plan to fly back with an expired card? Most/all airline won't allow you to board with an expired card (unless you have a US passport) .

Don't know what does having a job being related to getting PR card renewal. You need to meet RO. DO you/will you meet RO when you apply?
You can only apply inside Canada. Will you be able to return? Will you meet RO and apply for PRTD?

Well, without the job, I can't pay my bills, right?

what does RO stand for?
Permanent resident status determination - Canada.ca
RO - the simple answer is being physically inside Canada for at least 730 days within the last 5 years. Or being outside less than 3 years in the pervious 5 years.

Pursuant to subsection A28(2), a permanent resident complies with the residency obligation provisions with respect to a 5-year period if, for at least 730 days in that 5-year period, the permanent resident is

I though you were asking about renewing PR card.
Personal finance is not part of the expected topic. Some people come with savings and some have investment or business or job that can be done remotely.

I had that, I just didn't expect to deal with covid and some other problems.
