How long does it take to update Nexus after I receive Canadian citizenship?

I'll have a trip a couple of weeks after my oath ceremony, so I obviously will need to apply for my Canadian passport urgently. I know that I then have to visit a Nexus enrollment center to let them know of my new citizenship status, after I receive my passport.

What is this Nexus update process like? Is it just a matter of the officers updating my information on the backend, and they'll give my Nexus card back to me? Or would it take a few weeks to review? And would I instead get a new Nexus card in the mail?

You just go to a NEXUS enrollment center and bring your new Canadian passport. Tell them of your status change and give them the passport and NEXUS card. They will update your information right then and there, give you back your docs, and that is it. You current card is still active, you don't get a new card or anything. Very easy.

Note that you don't even need to schedule an interview. I did it at Pearson airport as a drop-in visit. The only thing that took time was waiting in the line.

ah ok. I was already a US citizen and that was already listed on my card. I had to get my PR information updated to with my Canadian citizenship information so I didn't need a new card.

This is the part I'm a little worried about. In that case, it might take time to receive the new NEXUS card (after my trip). So would I be able to use NEXUS when traveling on this trip with my current card?

I'm also interested in this topic as I'll be in a similar situation when I finally get my Canadian citizenship. So I don't know for sure, but if I had to guess.... I'd say that you probably won't be able to use the old Nexus card until the new one is issued. Perhaps ThierrYUL might know more, but I'd also imagine that they will probably take your current card away so that there's no chance of you having two cards at once. Again though, I'm just guessing...

It's not the worst thing though - you're obviously still allowed to travel, and having a Canadian passport will probably make your travel experience smoother than the Nexus card ever did anyway!

Sure...but the biggest problem is my flight back home to Canada will be just 2 hours after my meeting ends (it's the last flight for that day)...and without NEXUS, I'll most likely miss my flight! Oh well, it is what it is...

Ahhh, right I understand. Yeah Nexus really is great for skipping that damn security line (or at least getting into the short one and not having to take off your shoes)!

I think you can drop-in. This is what I have planned to do. nexus has been a life saver for me

Drop-in is definitely possible at YYZ; if you land at T3, you need to take the train over to T1. It's on the departures level (check-in counter level) before security, next to the police station.

Be warned: You don't need an appointment for document updates, but expect to spend 10 minutes to an hour waiting for your name to be called. One time I did a document update (adding a Canadian citizenship certificate) it took 20 minutes, another time it took 50 minutes. You need to sign in (there are two binders, one for interviews/appointments, one for updates).

Document updates are generally quicker at YUL - you knock at the door/buzz in, explain you already have nexus and need a "document update", hand them to officer, sit down. Both times I did a document update at YUL (work permit, which was subsequently amended) it took less than five minutes. There's no sign in sheet at YUL, at least when I went there in 2016.

Interesting topic, as I will also have to update my Nexus, and I was wondering about the citizenship on it. Now one question: I do have a valid I-94 (I hold a visa for the States) and I wasn't thinking of crossing the border before my oath. Has anyone crossed the border back to Canada as a Canadian and asked to return the I-94 to the border agent? I might end up just mailing it to the address they post online with notice of my acquired Canadian citizenship, don't really wanna drive there on the weekend even tho it's a short drive... so if anyone has done that and can share the experience, I appreciate it!

And yes! Update your info with Nexus! I got in trouble once when I forgot to update my new I-94! And you can just walk in without appointment in YVR as well.
