How fast did you get a temporary work permit?

Hi all.

An employer in Quebec would like to hire me. I can easily fill out the provincial and federal paperwork for a TWP. My question is this, how long does it take to get a federal TWP?

I know through the New York office it's 3 months average, but I'd like to know how long you waited from person experience.

No. We plan on starting that early next week. I am the first foreign worker they company has ever hired.

I would plan for the LMIA process to take 3-5 months (including the month required for advertising). Note that you may be able to skip the LMIA step if you are American and your job is on the NAFTA occupation list.

I'll let someone else comment on their experiences with the New York office.

It depends upon the NOC too. In Quebec certain professions such as IT / software specialists are still exempted from the advertisement requirement provided employer puts in some other information.

My employer still gets LMIA smoothly in a month's time roughly although it is for very specialized roles, plus they have been doing it for quite many years now and have a good population of foreign workers plus existing Canadians.

Pay particular attention to the advertising requirements.

Also note that the application must be in French.

The prospective employer may like or need to obtain professional advice.

As a general observation from my standpoint (mother of a cook & longtime personal involvement in the hospitality/food sector in Qc), there is not usually a shortage of qualified personnel in this sector ...

Assuming you are American... Hotel Manager is on the NAFTA list. Chef / restaurant manager are not - so an LMIA is required.

If you are working in Quebec - then an LMIA is still required for a restaurant manager position - however I believe your employer is exempt from the advertising portion of the LMIA. Not 100% sure this rule is still in place - you'll have to check.
