How do you bring your belongings into Canada if you use a transportation company? If you are bringing your own stuff across the border, I can see you are present there at the border with the paperwork, etc, but if you use a moving company to move your stuff, how do you get them across the border? Do you have to coordinate the date/time with the moving company and meet up with their representative at the border and get your stuff across? I am so not clear on the logistics....

I am just starting the immigration process, but I was wondering about this for a while now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, once the goods arrived in the port of entry, it will be transferred to a warehouse and the moving/relocation company would call you to make arrangements with the CBSA to schedule a meeting. Once you arrive at the CBSA office, you submit your stamped B4 form, shipping documents and you would be told to contact your moving/relocation company to schedule the delivery of your goods to your Canadian home.

Thank you very much for your quick response.

If I decide to have the moving company to transport my used car along with my other belongings, would the procedure for my used car be pretty much the same thing?

1. A lot more steps involved. YOu have to export it from the US, you need to apply for a ITN through AES. You have fax the proof of ownership to the US export office at the port of exit 72 hours before export. You need to import it into Canada. Start your reading at www.riv.ca

Thank you all.

I know someone who brought in her own used car to be imported from USA into Canada, and she said the process was pretty straight forward for cars that aren't 15 years old and the car is on the import eligibility list (just make sure all recall items are met and let the border know at least 72 hours in advance that you are bringing in your car) and do the odometer change and daylight change once it's in, is my understanding. She drove it to the border herself though, so I was wondering what the procedure would be if I had a company transport it in their van.

Anybody done that?

That was then, this is now. The US instituted a new rule about exporting property from the US. Read the following. https://www.riv.ca/USCustoms.aspx

U.S. export requirements

U.S. Census and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) require notification a minimum of 72 hours notice prior to export of all self-propelled vehicles being permanently exported from the United States.

Note: trailers or temporary exports are exempt from these requirements.
U.S. Customs Search

Select a state or province and select a border crossing to retrieve and display U.S. Customs office information or view a list of all U.S Customs offices.

CBP regulations state that at border points:

You will be need a U.S. Census ITN number. Which you can obtain using a U.S. AES-certified agent, freight forwarder or customs broker to electronically file your export information

72 hours prior to exporting your vehicle, you must provide CBP at the port of exit:
Proof of ownership
U.S. Census ITN number
The vehicle must be presented to U.S. Customs at the time of export.

CBP recommends that you contact the customs office where you plan to cross, directly, to verify the documentation required and their hours of operation.

Select a state or province, then choose the border crossing through which you will be importing your vehicle, to view contact information for the U.S. Customs office.

For more information, visit U.S. Census and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Thank you, PMM.

Have you imported a car from US? How was your experience? Did you drive to the border?

Anyone who used a moving company to move/import your US car across the border?

i'm exporting my car next week. as of october 2nd, the process got a bit more complicated. anyone who is exporting a car from the us has to initiate the export in the AES Direct exporting system. you can do it yourself by registering for the site (which requires you to take a quiz) or you can call a shipping/exporing company and ask if they will do it for you for a fee. Either way, the exporter MUST use an EIN# from the IRS in order for the report to be initiated. This is easy by calling the IRS or doing it online. The AES Direct system won't authorize the export without an EIN#, and it won't take SS#s for identification purposes. The exporting office at the border won't accept the paperwork without the ITN# which is generated by this electronic report.

There is a thread on here where we learn about this new requirement, and i think there are some links. i'll try to find it and post a link...

Thank you very much, rhcohen. After reading the thread you posted, I am leaning more and more toward selling my car in the US and buying one once I am in Canada....
