How could I sponsor my adult child?

Hi everybody!

I used Search on the forum but have found so far one old thread about how to sponsor an adult child. And besides it was not very clear.
So I would like to ask you again, and hope to get some advice.

I am a Canadian citizen, a widow with a good income. I have no relatives in Canada. My parents and grandparents passed away as well as my aunts and uncles. I have a sister and two nephews abroad (they are citizens of another country where all three of them live) , all of them are adults.

Also, I have a daughter, 27 yr, divorced with a child of her own. They are in Canada right now on Student visas.

Remembering the case with Robert Dzikanski (who unfortunately was tasered to death at Vancouver Airport in 2007) I wonder how his mother was able to sponsor him-a man of 40 years of age.
Were not their immigration case (circumstances) similar to mine? What do you think?

Thank you for your efforts!

So to confirm, you have absolutely no other family members who are Canadian citizens or PRs, living anywhere in the world?

If that's true then you can sponsor any 1 family member you choose under the "lonely Canadian" rule. Look at Option 2 - Other Relative: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/relatives-apply-who.asp#who_can

Correct. I have NOWHERE in the world any relative who is a Canadian citizen or PR.
Neither I have parents or uncles alive. Neither my sister is underage.

Then you qualify to sponsor one relative. Even if you had an uncle Canadian / PR or otherwise, alive, you still qualify since uncles/aunts goes not qualify under the family sponsorship.

So you can sponsor either your daughter OR your sister. Not both of them.

In their application, they can include any of their children that are aged 18 or under. Any of their kids 19 or older can not be included at this time (note the Liberals promised to increase age of dependents to age 21 and under, though it's not know when this will be implemented)

Thank you, guys! I understand I may sponsor only ONE relative in my circumstances. And my granddaughter is only 7, so she will be included in application with her mom - my daughter.

No, I do not think if I had an uncle or any other relative who was a Canadian citizen/PR I would be able to sponsor sister/daughter/nephew.

And if any of my parents were alive (and they passed away) I would have to sponsor them? Only in the current situation (when parents passed away) I may sponsor that ONE relative (sister/daughter/nephew) who otherwise are not eligible to be sponsored, correct?

That's the way the CIC rules suggest. If you have someone you can sponsor in a regular immigration stream (like parents though the PGP program), that is what you are expected to do first before considering any other relatives not allowed by typical programs.

You are correct. If you have an living uncle/aunt that is Canadian/PR, then you don't qualify for any one relative.

You may sponsor one relative, related by blood or adoption, of any age if you meet all of the following conditions:
•you do not have a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner,
or one of the following living relatives you could sponsor instead:
◦son or daughter,
◦parent,
◦grandparent,
◦brother or sister,
uncle, aunt,
◦nephew or niece.

•you do not have any of the above-named relatives who is a: ◦Canadian citizen,
◦permanent resident, or
◦registered Indian under the Indian Act.

Re: How to adopt a niece from Jamaica

My niece is 3 years old. How do I go about adopting her. I have already been approved to adopt her from SDA in Jamaica. But what is the next step in Canada?

I think the next step is to legalized your adoption in Canada first before you can start your PR dependent sponsorship. I am assuming that the niece is an orphan. If the nieces' parents are alive, then CIC may possibility view your adoption as an adoption of convenient much the same way of marriage of convenient.

Hi friends,

I am a lonely canadian immigrant and have no one in family who is Canadian PR or citizen. My whole family is in USA along with my parents who are USA citizens. My cousin(fathers brothers daughter) is a canadian PR but she lives in usa on business visa. My sister is in india but she will be immigrating to USA on family immigration soon.
I am not financially too welloff...my income is just $40,000 per year. Don't own a house yet.
I have a relative back home in india who needs to be sponsored. I want to help their family bring their son here.
How can i make this happen . I live in Ontario.

As your parents are alive, you do not qualify under the "Lonely Canadian" rule. Your relative will need to find their own way to immigrate.

There is already an existing immigration stream for parents, so that is what you're expected to use to sponsor parents first. So you don't qualify for the "other relative" sponsorship.

Whether you qualify to sponsor parents, if you want to sponsor them, or if they want to come to Canada... is all irrelevant. As long as they are alive you are not able to sponsor an "other" relative.
