Hi, I'm currently processing thru HK (HK resident) and here's my current status:

Sponsorship processing in mississauga - 1 month (but not sure what decision was made because they got my address wrong and still not corrected so I didn't get any letter from them yet).

Application processed in HK - almost 1.5 months - the VO office sent a letter requesting 1) HK police cert, 2) US FBI cert 3) sponsor's Letter of Release (eg. a letter that I will only get after I resign my job).

So maybe it doesn't need to take 18 months as they expect I quit my job now only after 1.5mths of processing...?? Who knows..

But I do have a friend (a few years ago) who got approved after 7 months. Of course it also depends if your case is straight forward or not.

Have you submitted your application yet?

what is a release letter? what did you show for proof of relationship. I have only been in a relationship with my wife for 5 months and we got married april 13 of this year. I dont have alot of phone records and I was using my mothers phone while I was in canada. we have wedding photos, and photos of when we went camping in hongkong, photos kissing (not sure if that is appropriate or not) I have a plane ticket to guangzhou. there is a busticket to hongkong with her but it doesnt say our names and its all inchinese. I am currently applying for a spouse visa in china. I really hope she can come to my brothers wedding in mexico also in febuary but that is another story. we have some msn message history but there is talk about visa and stuff in there so I dont know if I should include it. our relationship is genuine and we are very much in love. My mom talks to her alot on msn while she is at work and I have some friends who know we are married. also my whole family knows we are married. I was also wondering if I apply from in china do I put my chinese address or my canadian address on the application? I am currently visiting family here on a 1 year multiple entry visa for visiting family but can not legally work here. any information you have will help me tremendously

We applied in Hong Kong as we are both living in HK right now. I WISH also there is an msn or email I could get help but I don't think that exists... however, this forum is really a great help so you can read other people's posts to get some ideas.

can you tell me more about how you applied in hongkong, did you need a different application, what kind of evidence did you provide that you were going to live in canada with your wife? You give me great hope. I wonder if your application was faster because you are hongkong resident, hongkong residents can visit canada with out a visa right? anyway I am very happy for you. sounds like everything is running smoothly for you. this is my email address if you would like to converse back and forth a little off the forum wolanila@hotmail.com

The Letter of Release should only apply to HK residents (which deals with HK tax department) so I dont' think you need to worry about that.

For proof of relationship, I have a very different case than you because I've been married for nearly 10 years so I think the documents needed will be different (eg. I don't have any telephone records or email records from 10+ yrs ago when we were dating! And my husband even lost his old passport which showed his visits to Canada). Basically we included photos of us over these 10+ years. And we had our relatives and friends write email/letters about how they knew about our relationship and our son and it's a genuine marriage, etc. Some closer relatives had the letter notarized so I think that helps. Of course, our application has not been approved yet so I'm not sure if our supporting documents are enough or not. You can read other posts to see what other people use as supporting docs.

As for which address you should put, I'm not really sure, perhaps some experts here can answer that.

Good luck!

For such a short relationship, I think it is good for the application that you are planning to live with your wife in China. Show lots of proof that you are living together: any kind of financial document with both your names on it is good. For example: a joint lease, mortgage, or property deed; both names on any utility bills; a joint bank account or credit card; both of you named as the beneficiary on the other's insurance and will; envelopes and letters addressed to both of you, or either one of you at the the same address; a letter from the landlord stating that you are living together. You are maybe too young to have a lot of these things. Some, though, you can get. If you are living with her relatives, get an affidavit from them stating the two of you are living together with them as a couple, and that they believe your marriage is genuine.
I dont have alot of phone records and I was using my mothers phone while I was in canada.
If your mom's bills have your wife's number, use them as evidence, and get your mother to write a note stating you were the one making the calls to that number.
we have wedding photos, and photos of when we went camping in hongkong, photos kissing (not sure if that is appropriate or not)
Kissing is fine. Also get photos of the two of you with friends and relatives, to show that your marriage is well-known to the family and community.
I have a plane ticket to guangzhou. there is a busticket to hongkong with her but it doesnt say our names and its all inchinese.
Any travel evidence is good. Best if it has your names. If it is in Chinese, you would have to get it translated, and since it doesn't have your names anyway, maybe don't include it.

If she can get a visa to go to your brother's wedding, all evidence of the trip would be good.
I would not include any messages or emails that talk about immigration.
You can get an affidavit from your mother stating that she talks to your wife on the phone a lot and believes that your relationship is genuine. You can get support letters from several people who know you both, in fact.

I downloaded the application forms from the website in the section for applying Outside of Canada. Is that what you are using also?

Yes, HK residents don't need a visa to visit Canada.

For intention of moving back to Canada, this is a difficult one since it's hard to get a job offer when I don't even know when I will be moving back (only after they approve my husband) and I don't plan to do any studying when I go back. What I tried to do was put a month-by-month of activities to show my plans of moving back.

Eg.
Jan2011 - filled out application form, informed friends and relatives that I plan to move back
Feb2011 - booked medical appointment
Mar2011 - submitted application, started to look for jobs in Canada
Apr2011 - Registered our son for daycare/school in Canada, research on housing.....
When approved - sell our current house, buy plane tickets, inform family and friends of our upcoming arrival, find moving company, withdraw our son from school, close bank accounts.....

This is what I did but I'm not sure if it's enough or not (as I still do not know if my sponsorship was approved or not but I am guessing it was since they asked me to provide proof that I quit my job in HK).

We live in Guangzhou so our case is being processed in Hong Kong which is too bad because it is an 18month process instead of a 5 month process in Beijing. Also my husband will need a visa to go to Hong Kong for the interview. Oh well

Fingers crossed for a shorter waiting time

My wife lives in Guangdong so she is being processed through Honk Kong. I live in Canada
I asked to have her file moved to Beijing, no response, asked again and was informed that every time I write it delays process time.
Her application was received Nov 23, 2010
We then received a letter Dated Dec 7 advising us there were concerns as to our marriage and that within 120 days we would be informed if an interview would be required. I responded to some of the concerns noted, no response from Hong Kong. 120 days would be April 6, no word, no letter, I sent an email asking if they had made a decision.
On April 19, by email, I received the following: This application is in our interview queue, which is processed in chronological order. We will contact the applicant approximately 6-8 weeks before the interview date.

To be honest this only tells me we will be interviewed but no idea if we get notice a week from then, a month a year?
We then decide to make application for her to visit me in Canada, made the application, spent the money and provided Immigration yet again with stacks of papers, and notarized documents. The day after we made the application for her to visit we received a letter advising us of our interview for July 19.
Her visitor application was denied as she had no assets in China, Officer was not satisfied she would return, is it Canada or the Officer who considers assets more important than family. I know assets can be sold so why are assets so important but the fact that her 15 yr old daughter was not travelling with her, parents, brother, sister, friends, and a job not considered important.
Her interview was July 19, and I estimate our costs for her to attend and have documents prepared was over $1,000, I waited at home by the phone for over 4 hours as instructed. I was not phoned.
We do not know the results of the interview, the Interpretor says all was OK but she is not an Immigration Official.
So we wait again with no idea as to how long we wait.
To summarize:
My beefs are, no response to questions, or if they do respond they can be rude, threatening or simply ignore the question
No clear time lines or what the next step will be.
They do not adhere to time frames they committed too.
