Hello guys,

This forum helped me bring my wife to Canada in 2012 and now im back for some more help. My wife immigrated to Canada December 2012 from Ukraine, i was born in Canada. Her parents live in Ukraine and my wife would like to sponsor only her mother. Is that possible?

According to Canada immigration website a person needs past 3 years worth of Notice of Assessments, so in my mind that's 2012,13 and 14 but it reads on there website 2011 to 2013 is that correct, my wife has not worked since coming to Canada because we have a 1 year old daughter so i assume she will need me to Co-sign is this also correct? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

If her parents are still married, both will have to pass the health and security checks. That is, her father will have to be included in the application. So the income needed will include him as well. You can say is non-accompanying, but he will still need to be included.

If they are divorced, then you can sponsor just one of them.

The reason for this is that parents can be refused for health reasons. But when a PR sponsors a spouse, the spouse will not be refused because of a health problem (in most cases). So if the father, for example, has a health problem and would not be accepted, the children could sponsor just the mother. Once the mother is a PR, she could then sponsor her husband, and he would not be refused because of the health problem. This is a scenario the government wants to avoid.

Thank you for your reply. I would like to know what about a Super Visa for her mother. Is that possible to do without having to get her father a visa?

To sponsor the mom and dad this January you would need to co-sign, and would need to provide your own CRA NOAs showing income for 2012, 2013 and 2014 (forms will be updated soon to reflect January 2016 applications). With you and your spouse, 1 child, and 2 parents, you would need to meet MNI for family size of 5 for all 3 years.

You can indeed get a supervisa, which would allow her mom to stay here for up to 2 years at a time. Of course there is also a requirement to get private health insurance for a supervisa.
