Ok,
So I've been staying with my boyfriend in Ontario for the past 4 months. I am an american citizen. My grandpa is very sick, so I left yesterday to visit him for a week or two.

The border crossing went well, but when I said I was there for 4 months, they pulled me into secondary inspection. All was good, and I was sent on my way and got to Michigan safely.

My question is, will I have any trouble getting back into Ontario in a week or two? How much do they keep track of after secondary inspection?

I take it this will NOT reset my visitor's visa for 6 months now?

Sorry to hear about your grandpa.

If you did not overstay in Canada, you should be fine. Even though your were pulled into secondary on the U.S. side, they may in fact share information, but...you haven't done anything wrong. ;)

Americans are given 6 months (automatically) UNLESS the CBSA officer tells you otherwise and/or issues you a Visitor Record, with a date that you must leave Canada by. It sounds like you did in fact have the full 6 months, but only `used' 4 months, right?

When coming back, you should have a return ticket (refundable), along with proof that you have ties to the U.S. (job, bank account, home, etc.).

Also, if you are trying to establish common-law status with your boyfriend, you should return to Canada as soon as possible. If you are gone for more than a couple of weeks, it could jeopardize the 4 months that you already have towards the 1 full year of continuous cohabiting that is required.

Hi, you can go back anytime to canada since you are an american citizen. Provided, of course, you did not exceed 6 months of stay in canada/overstay.

I keep on coming back and forth from the US to Canada by car (i am a US resident) staying 1-3 months at a time. Your entry at the border will always be up to the CBSA/immigration officer at the POE to determine how long will you stay. If CBSA is not giving you any, it means you can stay up to 6 months.
