Dulman,

I am the sponsor. I worked full-time and apply for a daycare subsidy program from the government. I qualified and put my son in daycare while I go to work. She only needs an application and her last year CRA notice of assessment. Here is the catch: She has to have a full-time job. Instead of paying $700-900 a month for daycare I only pay $30+ a month. It's a good program to help single parents but they warn me that I have to let them know ASAP if my husband will arrive in canada. My husband needs to find a job within 10-15 days or subsidy will be denied. hope this helps.

HI ALL,
MY WIFE WANTS TO ASK FOR SOCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR OUR BABY WHILE AM STILL WAITING FOR PR DECISSION,COZ SHE IS STRAINING OVERTHERE AS SINGLE MOTHER WITHOUT ME. IS THAT GOING TO AFFECT OUR APPLICATION? PLEASE HELP BEFORE WE DO ANYTHING STUPID?
How close are you to getting your PR visa, based on the typical timelines of your visa office? If it looks like you will be getting the visa soon, try any way possible for her to not go on welfare. As soon as you get there, you can find a job and everything should be OK.
If she really needs help right now, she could try going on welfare. If the sponsor is on welfare, and the visa officer finds out, then the application will be denied, as others have said. But there is a small possibility that the visa officer will not find out about the welfare, and so would issue the visa.

Keep in mind I am suggesting this only as a last resort. If she has to go on welfare to survive, then she should withdraw your application and reapply when she gets off welfare; but this means you won't get into Canada for sure. If instead when she went on welfare, you just kept the application as it is, there is a slight chance the visa officer won't find out, and so you might get your visa.

OMG.....Alice you are so WRONG!

Please, please can someone inform the Mods and get the post removed ASAP. That is probably the worst post ever on this forum and the consequences could be huge.

A sponsor can NOT be on welfare....period.....

OK, this debate has just raised a question in my mind!

Recently God has blessed us with a Baby girl--I was talking to my wife who is a Canadian citizen and ofcourse my sponsor, she told me that she is eligible to have a regular monthly income from govt for the baby and amount is assessed by Parent's monthly income--is this child benefit or something else?--Although we can afford all the expenses without any support but my wife says this type of support wont harm our case much so why not to apply!!!

after reading the above posts I am deeply concerned if this is going to affect our PR Application-- please advise!

Thanks

It depends what the government money is called. What your wife describes is not welfare, so she can apply for it and get it without hurting your PR chances.

no hsbalouch those programs are not considered welfare u qualify if u have a certain income criteria welfare is generally for some1 that needs assistance generally bcuz they dont work generally(not always) the baby bonus as we call them are not form of welfare they are for lower income earners to help with the cost of raising kids

sounds good to be true--now I know why they have asked for both of us income details--but will confirm with wifey again!

thank you very much for the input!

I just wanted to say, Canadianwoman suggested that immigration may not find out..and yes thats true...but highly unlikely. I just read a long report on immigration law out of curiousity and it cites a ton of cases where people were found out.

The irony being some of these people got away with it for like years and had PR's revoked or were actually deported! Some who were citizens were jailed for immigration fraud. So even if you think you got away with it, someone could still discover it down the line.

Some of them are found out by just random check ups..or random things that nobody would ever think of.

So immigration is smarter than people give them credit for. Just because they are overloaded and sometimes miss things or misplace papers or forget stuff..doesnt mean they dont do their best. And they are diligent in ways people often forget...lying to immigration..NOT WORTH IT AT ALL!!! You will likely screw you and your family over royally and end up being deported and ineligable for a whole bunch of years..like at least five...and then you will have one heck of a fun time trying to reapply and get back in because then you are a huge risk and red flag!

As I mentioned, there are national child tax benefits (federal and provincial) that a family with children can apply.. These are income based and and can be 400+ per child for a low (single) income parent, scaling down with income.. The universal child tax benefit is income independent and is 100 per child (under 6) per month... There is a national working parent benefit that is only available for low income and can be another 200+ ish a month...there are also regional child care subsidies that can bring daycare down to $10 per day... this is in addition to the GST/HST and other quarterly government incomes... Also when one parent is not in Canada and not a PR, the parent in Canada can claim a child as equivalent to spouse, which results in a nice tax return...

None of these are considered social assistance/welfare... (I leveraged all to an extent minus the national working benefit and GST, which I wasn't eligible for, prior to and during sponsorship approval)

I have an aunt who was able to raise 3 kids and keep a house (mortgage) and 2 cars with a part time minimum wage job for over 3 years, without needing to resort to welfare...

There are other options to welfare.

Also if she is a new mother who has just given birth and previous held a job which she worked more than 600 (or is it 900?) hours in the year before giving birth, she is eligible for maternity benefits which is a certain %age of her income maxing out at 415ish per week... For the duration of a year...

For many, this $$ is more than would be received by welfare and I don't believe you can go on both at once... Maternity benefits are not considered social assistance, I can contest to that myself as I put my application in while on mat leave :)

Can also collect mat leave and the tax credits out of the country.... We spent 7m in Jamaica :)

this is very helpful indeed, I asked my wife about it and she told me that when she registered for baby's birth certificate it asked for her and mine income info, after filling that in and submitting the form they have sent her few more forms asking about my sin number and income details which ofcourse she doesn't have as I m not in Canada niether a PR yet. She told me its child tax benefit, means we should not be worrying much about it?

thank you very much for the detailed info above :)

The child tax benefit is not welfare. Your wife can get it and still sponsor you.
