Hmm, applying inland while commuting to the US... unlike outland, the requirement for inland is to live in Canada, so I'm curious how that would play out at the border. How long would he need to do this? I'd think it would be less stressful to simply quit the old job earlier.

You can get a NEXUS card which helps with the border crossings, but it's not something I would want to do. I have heard of quite a few other people doing this however. Usually with an outland app and VR.
Agreed. Also the NEXUS card certainly doesn't guarantee re-entry. If CBSA gets cranky and feels he's attempting to "live" in Canada as a visitor - it's possible he could be refused entry back into Canada. I personally think outland is the best way to go and hope for quick processing times.

I think if you apply for an outland sponsorship in a couple of weeks, there is a high likelihood of you getting an acceptance by July. Your application will be processed in Ottawa, and things can be quite fast there. Also, this is early February and processing speed is much faster now than later in the year when the yearly quota reaches its limits. Of course, nothing is guaranteed. Check recent statistics for outland applicants in Ottawa.

Perhaps, I would suggest starting with FBI and other police checks ASAP. As an American, you can get it from an approved channeler (instead of FBI), which will save a lot of time.

Hello there,

I am a Canadian born citizen and my husband is an American born US Citizen. We have been married for almost 3 years but only started living together 8 months ago. I was finishing up my residency in southern Ontario and my husband was living in Buffalo and working. I moved to US in July 2016 when I finished my residency. We currently live in upstate NY and have only recently decided to move to Canada. I have a US Green card through marriage. My husband is an American trained physician and has a contract offer to work as a physician in Canada. He wants to start working in July 2017 in Canada. This position is not research or teaching position so I don't think he qualifies under NAFTA but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. The family sponsorship route will take longer than a couple months so we are wondering if he qualifies to get a permit through another route such as skilled worker, etc. We are not sure what direction we should go in. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Thank you everyone for your help! I am very impressed with how knowledgable you guys are!

I just had 1 more question:
The paperwork for the outland family sponsorship immigration seems fairly straightforward, especially since it's only for my husband. Is it worth going through an immigration consultant or a lawyer or just do it yourself? The lawyers charge a close to 5000 (with fee and taxes incld). Let me know what you think.

do it yourself. you will find better and more accurate information on this forum than going through a consultant or attorney. there are many stories about consultants/attorneys actually causing delays in applications and providing wrong information.

I agree with others about doing it yourself. Even with a dependent on my application, we did it ourselves without a problem.
