Dear All,

I'm a PR and landed in Canada 10 days back. I want to sponsor a TR(Temporary Resident) visa for my wife so that she can come to ONTARIO immediately. After she gets here I want to apply for her PR.Now my questions is - Do people on TR visa get free Ontario health insurance after the 3 month waiting period like all other people.

Thanks

I do not believe she would get OHIP as a TR.

Eligibility
Ontario residents are eligible for provincially funded health coverage (OHIP). Generally, to be eligible for Ontario health coverage you must :

be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or among one of the newcomer to Canada groups who are eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ; and
be physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period; and
be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province; and
make your primary place of residence in Ontario.
OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase private health insurance in case you become ill during the OHIP waiting period.

It is not likely that your wife would be able to come to Canada immediately, as far as I can tell it seems that Visa's are not commonly issued to a wife of a PR who is in Canada.
I am not saying it never happens, but I guess the best option is that you should be looking at an outland PR application. Timescales are between three to seven months, once landed you wife would have to wait three months for OHIP coverage.

You should be aware that you need to remain in Canada during the sponsorship process.

I'm aware of all these process and I had done lot of research. To get PR from India under family class takes more than 6 months. So I would like to see if the TR visa works.Once she is here I can always do PR inland or outland

But the point is she is unlikely to get a TRV. So you would be wasting time and money.

this is probably not going to work. It's quite unlikely that she'll get a TR. She has to prove very strong ties to her home country to make sure she'd return (excellent job in her home country, assests, etc.). So you probably need to wait until she gets her PR status granted before she can come to visit you. This forum is full of sponsors who've been waiting for months (sometimes even years) to get their spouses over to Canada and I assume most of them tried to get a vistors visa to bridge the time and most were refused...

I'm a little bit surprised that she wasn't on your PR application as you're obliged to notify CIC about all marital changes during your application process and I suppose even before landing (I'm not quite sure about the latter one though)...
I guess the 'free' health insurance might be your least problem right now...

Hi, there as far as I know there is no Health Benefits for temp residents anywhere in Canada. Your Best bet is to buy a travel insurance, in case of emergency.

Goodluck to you and your wife !!!
