Hello,

I need some advice on health insurance. I and my family (wife, son and a daughter) used to live in BC. I was unemployed in BC for a while and due to poor economic conditions my family moved back to my home country (with no fixed deadline to come back). We did not cancel BC health Insurace Plan (BC), as there was no certainity when they will return. It has been 4 months that they are out of Canada. My son is Canadian citizen and wife and daughter are PR.

Later I found a job in Ontario and moved in ON. I exchanged my BC driving licence with ON licence and BC came to know that I have moved to ON. So they sent us letter and forms to be filled saying that if we do not respond by March end, they will cancel the health insurance. My family is coming in March or April first week.

Now my family wants me to join in ON. Which means they are not going back to BC. Since they are coming from my home country, Ontario Health Plan (OHIP) will not cover for first 3 months. In this situation I have following option:

1. CANCEL BC Health PLAN (AHI) and buy a private insurance for them for first 3 months waiting.

I am wondering if private health insurance can create a problem later if they come to know that my family had a BC health insurance and since we cancel it they cannot provide us coverage (BC will cancel it anyhow if we don't respond, and I cannot simply say they will come to BC when they don't intend to go to BC). I have talked with private insurance and they have said that it doesn't matter and I can buy 3 months of TRAVEL insurance for returning residents for my family (3 different companies replied same).

Private health insurance cannot cover you if you are eligible for GOVT Health Insurance. But since there is 3 months waiting period in ON for guys who are coming from outside Canada, and since they have left BC forever, they are NOT eligible for either of GOVT insurance (thats what is my viewpoint).

I do not want to lend in situation where in case I need emergency medical service and private health insurance refuses to cover it for trivial reasons like I cited above.

Thanks in advance.

The main reason why private insurers would exclude cover if your family is eligible for provincial health care, is to prevent double payment for the same thing.

As such if your family does not have cover, or is refused care, under your ON cover, because of waiting period, a private insurer would have very little argument for not paying.

My suggestions is more is better. Worst case you will pay a premium for private cover, which never pays anything.

Just a thought.
