Hi

We will be shortly moving to Canada. I am an AINP and hence would move to AB. However based on the job availability I may also move to ON.
(1) How much time normally it takes for getting the Health Insurance (in AB and ON).
(2) If I move to ON initially and then to AB, how much time it takes for transfer (from ON to AB or vice versa)

Thank you.

I don't know the answer to #2, though I have seen topics on it here that indicate you are covered while you move from one province to the other after you are initially covered under one.

Ontario - 3 months wait.
Alberta - immediate/retroactive, meaning you apply, and may have to pay out of pocket (say if you arrive and need medical attention within I'll say the first month though I"m not certain the time frame it does take) but then you'd be reimbursed

So in the case of question 2, if I understand it correctly - if you moved to Alberta first, you'd have immediate and 3 month coverage wherever you went thereafter upto 3 months (when OHIP would kick in anyhow). If you moved to Ontario first, you'd have 3 months wait, and 3 months overlap if you moved to Alberta (though it's immediate there) I know that there is at least one other province that has no waiting period, but not sure which.

CanUSA has opined correctly. Alberta - 0 wait pd. Ontario - 90 days.

Your wise decision would be to move to AB initially - to get the Medicare from day-1. Move to ON thereafter, as u'd still be accessing the AB Healthcare for 60 days in ON; & would only have a months' void.
