Hi Everyone,

My American husband has been in the country since December 14th, 2017 and he ended up getting a Temporary Resident Visa R1 83(6) back in September. We applied prior to his 6 month stamp expiring. He got approved to stay in the country until September 2019, basically one year later from the date that the CPC approved the Visitor Extension. We're extremely grateful for the length of time allowed. For those wondering, we included my proof of income over the last 3 months, our marriage certificate, photos of the wedding, as well as an explanation on why we need the extension. This detailed that we're planning to apply for his PR and we'd like more time together as a married couple after getting married back in May 2018.

I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible for Temporary Residents who have been here for a year (for him it's upcoming soon) to get Ontario health coverage? It's a concern in the back of our minds if he needs medical attention ever and isn't covered.

We're practically ready to send off our Spousal Sponsorship Permanent Residence (Outland) application. We plan for him to stay while the PR application is processing, however we do want the option for him to be able to go back home to the US if he needs to at some point in coming months, which is why we're choosing Outland.

Any info is appreciated about health coverage. From my research it seems like they can't get covered.. but I wanted to know if anyone has had experience with looking into it. Sorry for the long message, I type a lot. Thank you in advance!

He will not be covered by OHIP under this circumstance. If you apply inland with the OWP, pending he receives a letter from an employer guaranteeing 6 months of continuous full time work, he could.

I just did some research and saw this under eligibility. It seems like he could be eligible if his TRV is considered under that list. Not sure if his TRV is counted as R183 or what the (6) means after it. I’ve attached screenshots.

Your husband will get OHIP on the first day of becoming PR or with WP, if employer says he will be employed for 6 months as he has already stayed for more than 90 days now.

You should buy a visitors insurance from Canada for your spouse or should get one from US. For more details, you can reach out to me.

TRPs and TRVs are not the same thing. I'm assuming he extended his stay as a visitor and that's how he's here now? If so he's not eligible.
Yes, he extended his stay. Sorry, I was getting confused/there isn’t a whole lot of information out there on this. Thanks anyways.

Then definitely not eligible as I said. Went through the same with my Irish husband who extended twice, so I get the stress. Good luck!
