Hey everyone just wondering if anyone had any similar problems like this:

My husband tried filing his taxes and h and r block said nothing would go through with my social, because I'm Canadian. And the only way for it to work is if we mail it in or something like that. Is there any other way?

Thanks

What exactly do they/you mean by "nothing would go through with my social, because I'm Canadian"? Are they saying you have an invalid SIN?

They told him they couldn't use my SIN because it's not a SSN or ITIN

So you are referring to him filing US taxes then, correct?

Yes correct,

I was just wondering if it's possible for him to apply as married but separate using my SIN

Sorry, if it was Canadian taxes I might have been able to help. However not for US taxes, albeit I still do not clearly understand your dilemma, as presented.

I suggest you call CRA Canadian tax center and ask about filing income tax .

We are in the same boat. Our H&R had to call in a manager from another area to show them how to do it. They hit a snag since they didnt know what CCR or somethign was abbreviated on my T4 but we will be finishing filing this week. I'll let you know if we hit another issue.

My understanding is that if he files Married, Filing Separately then as long as he is not taking you as an exemption, he can write N/A in the line for the social security number. If he wants to take you as an exemption, then he needs the SSN or ITIN.

Thank you, that is what he ended up doing!

My wife is American and I am submitting a request to get an ITIN, however it is not clear to me if I have to submit my taxes to the IRS along with the ITIN application. Anyone with experience getting an ITIN?
