Dear Friends,

One of my friends has got immigrant visa and is ready to fly to Canada with his family. Can anyone tell me whether he can carry Indian groceries like chili powder, sugar, tea, spices etc so that he could save money initially on buying these things from Canada itself?

Thanks

Airline will give him a form before landing and he will have to declare anything he is bringing including food items. Depending on them, they can check the bagage on arrival and allow you to go with it or they can ask throw in the garbage but if you don't declare and they checked it, it can be problem. I won't suggest that.

Hi,

No problem if you bring groceries with you for your immediate use, which should limit within the allowed baggage weight.
Every person can take 2 pieces of baggage weighing upto 23 Kg (total 46 Kg per person) in addition to his/her hand bag ( usually 7 or 8 kg)

The food items should be processed and sealed. Canada will not allow any raw food products and plants. Means you are not allowed to carry some mangoes, other fruits or vegitables. But you can take sealed/ bottled pickles or packed sweets etc. for own use or gift.

You will get a form to fill up in the air plane before landing, in which you can just mention : processed food stuff.

An advice:

In fact you can easily buy it over here. All Spices are available in Asian stores. But you may bring some reasonable quantity for immediate use.

Why you need to carry grocerry? 8)Well Toronto is not on moon and secondly it has more desi grocessry shops than anywhere else in the world pehaps, this is the only thing which you don't need to find
