My partner just got approved for temporary residence? We have applied for permanent residence through the common law class?
A couple weeks ago we got the notice that permanent residence was approved pending medical, background check etc.

Today we received an email saying temp residence is approved with an expiry of next year? What’s happening?

Hi,

"Status" is a legal concept and you can only have temporary or permanent resident status as a foreign national in Canada. To not have a status is to be, "without status." Lots of people refer to this as being in Canada illegally.

It seems that you're describing a common immigration processing model where the applicant for permanent resident's status is maintaining his/her temporary status until becoming a person with permanent resident's status.

Terms get thrown around like student and worker and visitor but these are all temporary residents so long as they maintain their status as such. Legally, it seems, your spouse is a temporary resident with authority to work in Canada and likely subject to some conditions (closed or open work permit).

Ok perfect, that's what we assumed he was on temp residence before the application! So this isn't a mistake and just a normal process. Thank you!

Are you sure you got PR approval. Many people confuse getting approved as a sponsor with getting approved for PR.

Yes we got approval pending the other stuff from this email.

Please note that a final decision will not be made until all remaining requirements for becoming a permanent resident have been met. These requirements include medical, security and background checks for you and, if applicable, all of your family members, both in Canada and abroad, even if they are not applying to join you in Canada at this time. You cannot become a permanent resident until you and all your family members have met these requirements.

Canuck78's question remains valid, asking if sure you received PR approval. The email you have quoted says, in what to me appears to be its main message:

Maybe I am missing something, but to me, all that says is that you are able to apply, not that any application has been approved. I am reinforced in this view by this part of the massage:

Please note that a final decision will not be made until all remaining requirements for becoming a permanent resident have been met.

That suggests that the application will be decided once all requirements met. In other words, no decision has yet been made.

Yes that is correct but it's awaiting Medical which i have completed with zero issues as told by the doctor. Background checks and police reports are completed with no trace and there are no dependents or family members. Obviously it's not been "officially" confirmed but unless a law changes it's a time thing i assume. Just confused as to why his temporary permit was extended in the mean time.

You are fine. What is outstanding are the statutory requirements necessary for anyone to qualify for permanent residence. The holy trinity of medicals, criminality and security.

In the meantime just maintain the temporary status until it all comes together in a landing document that will alter the status to permanent.

I am not certain but, if this was an inland application, I believe this may be the approval-in-principle.
