I just have landed to Canada last Monday, 20 October 2008. I arrived via Edmonton, AB Airport claiming refugee. What I had understood is that the government should give me some aid or help, like accommodation, meals and some money, but they didn't give me anything. They told me that I will get a Work Visa up to in 2 months or maybe more time, and I don't have enough money to survive that long without making some money.

1) Is there a legal procedure I can do for the aid/help of the government?
2) Do you advise or suggest me to work without a Work Visa?
3) Any other advise?

Thank you, very much.

Jorge.

1. You claimed to be a refugee on entry, which doesn't make you a refugee.
2. You are on your own, their is no federal help for refugee claimants.
3. You can apply for welfare support provincially, but there is a waiting period. http://employment.alberta.ca/cps/rde/xchg/hre/hs.xsl/689.html

Until he gets a work permit, he can not work. He can collect cans and bottles and take them to the bottle depot or he can stand on the street and ask for change. He can go to the soup kitchen and other such places to eat for free and to the food bank to get food. Possibly he can get some welfare money, I don't know that system too well.
