Interesting. I guess when we buy the tickets we'll try and find one flying into Terminal 1. Thanks for the info :)

Sounds good, though I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Getting a SIN number is very easy whether at landing or afterwards.

Most likely your work benefits will not even allow him to be added to those "bonus" items like dental, massage, eye etc coverage, until he has full OHIP coverage in place (so after 3 months). This is a general policy with most employer health plans in Ontario.

Make sure to get a 3-month travel emergency medical policy. You can compare some plans and prices here: https://www.kanetix.ca/travel-visitors-to-canada

Here is a list of what documents he will need to show proof of residency to OHIP. You must have 1 of the specific items from List 2, before you can apply. Of course there is no incentive to apply early since either way he won't be eligible until 3 months after landing, so take your time. http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetFileAttach/014-9998E-82~1/$File/9998-82E.pdf

Thanks Rob. So, will OHIP know when he's landed, so they can determine the 3 months wait time?
I'll check out those emergency medical policies! Much appreciated.

The COPR or PR card will have date of landing, and that will be taken by OHIP as the first day of the 3 months.

Wow I like that link of price comparison for travel insurance. What you people think would be the right coverage? 50K, 100K? Its so hard to estimate as we never get receipts when we go to hospital. My wife is 26 years old with no pre-existing medical condition.

For 3 months, I found the difference between 50K and 100K trivial so i simply went for the larger coverage.

More important to us was the deductible. I would go for $50K coverage with $0 deductible, vs $100K and say $100 or $200 deductible. Of course yes if the costs for 50K vs 100K at $0 ded on both is within a dollar or two... just go for the higher coverage.

In my wife's case, she used the coverage on a relatively small issue that only cost around $400 in total, so we were happy we chose a coverage with $0 deductible and got everything paid for.

Ok, 0$ deductible is what I will look for. I actually didn't check the price difference between 50 and 100K hehe. Thanks for your answers guys.

Hi guys.
So anything else that we need to show other than COPR?
Are there interviews?
What is the process and what do we need to prepare?
Thx

You need to show your travel document (passport) also.

There will be a short, easy interview. They will ask you if you are sick, been charged with a crime, if any change was been made to your family status since the application (had a baby, got divorced/separated, got married, etc). Some other simple questions that I can't remember. Nothing to prepare, simply answer the questions. But answer honestly. If you lie to these questions you have committed misrepresentation and they can revoke your PR and bar you from entering Canada.

The process is this - you show your COPR to immigration official and say you want to immigrate to Canada. They will then take you to a separate area where another official will ask for passport, COPR and interview you. They will ask you for your address in Canada (this address is used to mail your PR card to you). Then both you and the officer sign both copies of COPR and the officer takes the one with your picture and you keep the other. That is pretty much it from what I remember.
