Going on international exchange programme while waiting for PR Card renewal

Hi
Does anyone know if I go on an international exchange programme while being enrolled in one of Canada's Universities, on during my PR Card renewal period (which is when my PR Card would have expired), will this affect my PR Card renewal? Also, can I enter Canada again with my PR Card when returning back to Canada? This exchange programme would last around 6months to a year.

Any opinion is appreciated!

Depending on the information you have, you may be able to apply for urgent processing of PR Card, so it speeds up and you can go on the trip. If you don't receive it by the time you leave, you can apply for a travel document to return to Canada.
