Going from US to Canada with Kindle

Has anyone else gotten a Kindle while in their home country (particularly the US) and then moved to Canada? Does the Kindle still work right? Are there any issues with book availability? I want one but I'm not sure if I should get one now or later when we're in Canada.

I see people with Kindles all the time on the beach here in Jamaica. And they are sold in stores here, too, so I'd say it will work just fine in Canada if bought in the US. I'm guessing the only restrictions would be on whether the publisher has licensed sale of the book in the country. I'm mad about audiobooks, but not all the ones I try to buy are available for sale to me because of licensing restrictions. I doubt there would be any such restrictions between Canada and the US, but there is a small chance?

If you have a US Kindle, it'll work in Canada over wifi with no issue and keep using the US Amazon Kindle store. If you connect through 3G, it'll work but you'll be assessed an additional $1.99 download charge (for roaming, since the US Kindle is only designed to work on either ATT or Sprint, depending on the version). I'd recommend keeping the US version (there's an international version that they sell here in Canada but it uses Canada's Amazon store which has less selection), but it requires a US address and credit card (though you can, if required, buy an Amazon gift card at amazon.ca and use it on the US Kindle store ).

Easy answer: yes, just make sure you use it over wifi!

Thanks guys! I'm not sure how the wifi will work at home, only annoyingly slow satellite internet is available at my husband's house, and the closest neighbor is a mile away, with others much further... he has a wireless router and all that, but I don't know if that counts as "wifi." I might have to get a Canadian Kindle just for the free 3G. This page (the 3G Kindle), when I select Canada, says:

Free Wireless: Free 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle. No monthly fees, service plans, or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. For non-U.S. customers, there are also no additional charges for wireless delivery in or outside your home country.

Just make sure there's 3G reception over there. Is there cell phone reception in that area? Otherwise there's a good chance you won't have 3G signal...

Anyway, I don't like the Kindle. We just got a PocketBook 902. No 3G, but at least it supports a whole lot of open source formats (including Amazon ebooks).
