Getting prescription medication in Canada as a tourist?

Hello,

My partner is coming to live in Canada as a tourist for 6 months, but it says that you can only bring a 90 day supply of medication.. They are on hormone replacement therapy and I feel it might be difficult getting refills for it without having to see an endocrinologist.. How will they be able to get their prescriptions filled for the remaining 3 months?

You will need to get a notarized translation of the prescription. Then you can get this prescription to the nearest walk in clinic and ask for a doctor to evaluate you. The doctor may redirect you to a specialist or might give the prescription themselves. Then you go and fill the prescription.

Prepare for all expenses.

If the prescription is in English already, that's okay? Then, if so, they would only need to bring a 3 months supply of medication and the written prescription?.. Also, I read somewhere that foreign prescriptions are sometimes not honoured in Canada..

They aren't, that's why you are going with a physician to get evaluated. Part of your case is the prescription. The physician will then decide if a new prescription on the same terms should be given or not.

go to any walkin clinic, you will just need to pay the consultation fee(my mom in law case, payed 50CAD). Then we got the meds from the pharmacy

It can go anywhere from 40 to 150 dollars. My usual clinic charges 90.... so looking in advance for better options is a good idea.

Thank you everyone! Still may need to go out of province in order to see a specialist, as most doctors here are hesitant on prescribing hormone medication.

I got confused when I saw the username (still waking up) :p

I kinda wish the medication wasn't so expensive, but I think things will be okay after they get PR, since I can just put them on my jobs medical / med coverage.

Stay hopeful!
