Getting married + Name Change after application filed

So my fiancé and I applied online (March 2021) and have both received our AOR. Nothing after that. We want to get married soon, and she wants to change her name last name to mine. We were born in different countries. On their system we are seen an common law partners.

I just got off the phone with IRCC. The person I spoke with stated that if she changes her name after the application is approved then it will take a long time to get her name changed on the citizenship certificate (>16 months). If it does take that long, then if at the mean time she uses the Canadian passport (with her maiden name) would that be allowed?

Or I was thinking that if we get married right after we take our citizenship test, then submit for a name change it would expedite the process. Does anyone know if that would be allowed? Or is there a better option? We really want to get married but not delay the process of either application.

So I got married and never took my husband's last name. I submitted my name as is prior to marriage. I live in BC and when I called in to check what are the options to change the name with ICBC(agency for BC) the lady said just called immigration and submit ur marriage certificate along with what name you would like to prefer. I called CIC and the lady on phone said the same as ICBC lady. She asked me to send a webform with my marriage certificate and also the name you want on my citizen certificate when it's done. This is what I have done and I changed my name here after my test. For now I am still using my name prior to the wedding but once I am a citizen my name will be changed to husband's last name. Hope this helps

@namratha thank you for your response. So you submitted the webform + marriage certificate prior to getting your test invite or after it? I am asking because I am scared that it will delay our application or there will be an issue when taking a photo of our ID during the test.
Just so I can understand, currently you are still using your maiden name but have submitted the webform + marriage certificate, right? When you took the test was your last name your maiden name or your husband's name?

So my name goes like "FIRST_NAME LAST_NAME",I submitted my file with this name. I had my test end of Aug with this same name. I finished the test got an update that test is completed and thats when I called CIC about name change. Submitted my name change webform with my marriage certificate stating I would want my name after citizenship as "FIRST_NAME HUSBAND_NAME HUSBAND_LASTNAME"

Oh ok that's what I was thinking of doing. @namratha_s Did you get married before or after receiving the test invite? Also, was your background and everything else marked as completed prior to you getting married?

This is a little unusal. But I think it's a cultural norm for some part in the world.
Just in case you receive any mail/paperwork with "HUSBAND_NAME HUSBAND_LASTNAME", it could be actually for you.

Some business randomly pick a name with a last name and use it.

Yes, It is a cultural norm. I am from South America and she's from the Philippines. In those parts of the world usually when married the woman takes the husband's last name. It is not as usual as it used to be but my fiancé just wants to do it so I am just preparing for it.

Taking husband's last name is pretty common. But taking also husband's first name is what I was referring to.

I was married b4 submitting the file
So you were already married when you filed your application but just used your maiden name, right? Then after taking the test you submitted the webform stating you wanted a name change.

Sorry for all the questions .

That's right. I was married like 1.5years and then filed for citizenship. After the test I called CIC. Submitted webform with marriage certificate and that I will be taking my husbands name and last name.

Shoot me any questions anytime
