Can I get a driver licence while I am in a process of family sponsorship?
or should I first wait to get the PR or AOP?

It depends on the province and if you're applying outland or inland.KUKULICKA said:Can I get a driver licence while I am in a process of family sponsorship?

I'm not sure for inland, but for outland, that's not the case. Hubby has an American car, if he got an Ontario DL he would not be able to drive the car legally. I'm not sure if, when applying for inland, you are basically LIVING in Canada yet. I'm sure someone else has an answer. But for outland, you cannot get a DL until you get PR in Ontario.truesmile said:You had better NOT wait. In Ontario, if you are visiting for more than 3 months you are "required" to get one (if you wish to drive). Do you have a drivers license from your home country? If you do, you can only use that for 60 days from the date that you moved to Ontario.
I did get my Ontario DL but I'm not a PR yet. I'm just a visitor. Germany has an agreement with Canada, so I could exchange my German DL to an Ontario DL without any tests, I just had to pay the fee. I'm applying outland.parker24 said:But for outland, you cannot get a DL until you get PR in Ontario.
USA does as well, but like I said, hubby has his car here. If he exchanged his DL for an Ontario one, he wouldn't be able to drive his car. And his bank will not give us the title until he proves he's moving here (aka gets PR status) and we pay it off. Nice of the bank eh? :-\Franzi said:I did get my Ontario DL but I'm not a PR yet. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/visiting.shtmlIf you are a newcomer to Ontario and hold a driver's licence from another province or country, you are required to apply for an Ontario driver's licence within 60 days of residing in Ontario. If you hold a non-Ontario licence, you are legally allowed to drive in Ontario for 60 days before an exchange is required.
If you are a visitor to Ontario and want to drive while you are here, you must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver's licence from your own province, state or country. If you are from another country and visiting Ontario for more than three months, you need an International Driver's Permit from your own country or you may have to apply for an Ontario driver's licence, depending on your length of stay. You should also ensure your automobile insurance coverage is sufficient, and that you carry the original or a true copy of the vehicle registration or Certificate of Title for your vehicle.
Thing is, I'm not allowed to drive it as a Canadian(Someone told me on here about this), which is why we decided not to exchange his DL, because if I can't drive it as a Canadian, then he can't obviously, if he has an Ontario DL. PLUS his insurance will not allow me to, and if he gets an Ontario DL, they said he will not be allowed to drive it. Which is kinda stupid. If we weren't so short on money all the time, we'd get him an IDL but sadly, we cannot afford to pay for the dang thing. We just barely have enough to pay for an extension of his visitor's visa since it seems like he isn't getting PPR quite yet.Creampop said:I have Ontario Driver's licence have had it since April 2012 I do not have PR status yet just mailed my passport off last week... as truesmile said it is Illegal to be driving in Ontario after 2 months, even if visiting(we posted about this before)... your husband is a temporary resident and he can/should change drivers licence over ... as far as driving the car it is only Illegal for him to drive the car into Canada (because any car coming into Canada with a Canadian DL is supposed to be imported) but even now they have revised that law I'd have to look into how it has been revised but he can't tag the car here until he imports it but, he can drive it, even with Ontario DL.
