Hi. I'm an international student, from India. I'm currently pursuing my Class 12 from ISC board.

I am planning to enroll at a Canadian college or university this year. I wanna take up Computer Science or some IT field(I'll research later which suits me best). I'm in a confused state of mind! I cannot decide between a college diploma or a university degree. I have heard that university degrees are considered to be prestigious and that college diplomas aren't that useful when it comes to securing full-time jobs.

Should I go with a college diploma or a university's bachelor's degree? The SIEC counselling team advised me to take up a college diploma for 2 years --> get a job --> work for 1 year --> Apply for PR --> Get the PR --> Continue your studies and attend 2 more years at a university at domestic fees and get a university degree --> Work full time.
Should I carry forward with this plan? I may add that I cannot afford the top notch universities because of their insane tuition fees.
So what do you guys think?

Which of the two has better job prospects?

As for my profile, I'm a bright student. Scored 89.2% in Class 10 boards and expecting above 90% in Class 12.
I've shown persistent performance in Computers throughout my school. Scored 98 on 100 in Class 10 and expecting to score 100 in Class 12. I also have an award given by my school for academic excellence in Computers and Maths.

So is the plan mentioned above worthwhile?
Thanks in advance :)

First, please remove that notion from your mind that Colleges Diploma are NOT USEFUL and Uni Degree ARE. Yes, in India such scenario is there, but not in Canada.

There are lots of people around who did B.Sc from India, came here to do Diploma from college and currently earning top-notch salary in reputed firms.

Yes, of course Uni degrees does have SOME advantage, but when it comes to look for a job, it doesn't matter at the entry level. However, to study in Uni for a degree course will rip you off for sure, but after all its an Investment which you will make for your bright future.

Regarding the Work-Flow for PR and for further studies, I would personally recommend to go with the SIEC plan. There are few benefits which you will get

1. High GPA (above 4.0) in Diploma will open doors for you in many universities (especially where International Students are scrutinized based on strict criteria)
2. After completing College Diploma of 2yrs you will get 3yrs open work permit which will allow you to get familiarized with un-chanted waters of vast labor pool in Canada.
3. During the OWP period, you will be able to apply for PR after which you will be able to study in Uni at MUCH LOWER COST and Canada govt. will also give you OSAP (of course you will have to pay it back).

So, bottom-line ITS YOUR OWN DECISION TO MAKE....but I would suggest to go with SIEC plan.

Hope this helps

Hey.. Thanks a lot for your reply.
However, I'll be taking up an education loan and generally, the repayment gets started after 1 year of completion of studies or 6 months after a job has been secured (Whichever is earlier).. So I'm afraid if I don't land a well-paid job after the two year diploma, then I'll be under huge debt and the main focus might shift towards repayment of the loan and not further studies! I don't want to be under pressure because I aspire to study a lot.

Anyways, I've decided to apply for Bachelor's of Computer Science or Computer Engineering in University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg. Both of them are great, right? I researched and found that UoM lies in 300-350th rank in the world rankings. Moreover, the tuition fees are very reasonable. What do you say?
Thanks :D

Good...

Since you are choosing the university based on ranking. Here are some gr8 universities for Engineering and Computer Science. List based on rank

University of Toronto
University of British Columbia
McGill University
McMaster University
University of Alberta
University of Montreal
University of Waterloo
Dalhousie University

The fees will be much higher compare to Manitoba and Winnipeg, but since you are going to take loan; why not to get into a Good University rather than a lower ranking uni. It will be a Bit more costly BUT this INVESTMENT will SURELY PAY OFF.... The More You Invest in Good Company Portfolio (shares/equity) The MORE YOU EARN....(first rule of a good investment)

These are my personal views only.

Hey going for bachelors from university shld be ur 1st preference and it will be the best option for sure.

Bachelors in canada is of 4 years and there are realy very affordable world class universities in canada.

1.Memorial Uni of Newfoundland(most affordable & world class uni(higher ranking) in canada.
2.University of Saskatchewan.
3.University of calgary.
4.University Of Manitoba.
5.Simon fraser University.

Your 2nd option should be post secondary diploma/practical diploma from institutes like Red River College,SAIT,NAIT,Bow Valley College etc. which will be highly beneficial for entering in the job market.
If u get dese courses with co-op then balle balle lol :p.

As u have good academic qualifications & mainly good scores in Maths, hope u will face no difficulty in getting admission for Bachelors.
So try to research first before taking decision as it will be ur life changing decision.

Rest on you,
Good luck

How can you say so?
I personally don't think that University of Manitoba and MUN are garbage. MUN was listed at #5 in the Maclean's 2014 ratings. I consider both of them to be good ones. Ofcourse I'm not talking about the top-notch universities like UBC or UoT or Mcgill because these are pretty much out of my budget-zone. So I'm thinking University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg or MUN for my undergraduate studies. After that, I'll move to the United States for my masters degree from a reputed university.
