You would think! But we just pay taxes (even social security and medicare that only citizens are eligible for) as everybody else and get no benefits in return. We started out as students, so the 10 years. But even if you started out on a work visa, it is about 6 years till they (your employer) sponsor your green card. One can't apply for greencard oneself (except in rare cases like if you are a famous singer, actor, scientist etc). Depending on country of origin, it can be 2-15 years just to get a greencard after applying. And then another 5 years to apply for a citizenship. So pretty much it's a wait, wait, and wait forever game all the while your status depends on your employer. Ironically the easiest and faster route to a US green card is winning the dv lottery! and of course not all of us are lucky.Jango1 said:Namaste,
10 years in US ? You should be a citizen of US by now having same benefits as others ?
Could you give more clarity please ?
Oh, and even to get a work visa, there now is a lottery because of their stupid quota that was set in the 90s. So, even if you have a job offer or are already working for an employer that wants to sponsor your work visa, you need to win the lottery to be able to do so. Very democratic :
