hey guys, i have a brief question about plane flights to canada

so heres the scenerio, my hubbie just got his PR to canada, through ankara VO. While booking a plane flight, does it need to be direct flight to toronto so basically ISTANBUL - TORONTO ? or can it be that we get a plane ticket that does a stopover, so ISTANBUL - MUNICH - TORONTO. im asking this because me being a canadian citizen never had to worry when i was buying a plane ticket anywhere since my lovely passport allowed me to travel, but hes a turkish citizen with a PR to canada and it makes me wonder if this PR allows him to take a plane flight through another country into canada after. my solemly reason for asking this is because it is SOOOOOO much cheaper to book a ticket that is not direct flight but 1 stopover instead saves a great deal of money.

thank you from advance !

Hello,

Good question. His PR does not give him any special access to any country except Canada, as he is still considered a citizen of his own country until he becomes a citizen of Canada.

As such, he can only do a stop-over in another country on his way to Canada if that country allows citizens of his own country to do so. If he wouldn't normally need a visa to visit the stop-over country (ie. if your husband would be allowed to go to Munich without a visa just using his local passport) then he should be fine to do a stop-over. If, however, your husband would need a visa to visit Munich, he will either need to apply for a special visa that allows stop-overs or choose another country (where he doesn't need a visa) as the country he's stopping in.

Most countries have government websites that tell you a) what countries NEED a visa to visit/stop-over there and 2) if they offer a visa for stop-over flights (most do).

For example, my husband is from Dominica. If he gets PR, he cannot take a flight from Dominica to the USA to Canada because his country needs a visa to visit the USA. If he wishes to do it this way, he has to apply for a visa to the USA that allows him to temporarily stay in the USA (usually for 24 hours or less) to catch his stop-over flight.

I suggest you try and find a ticket that has a stop-over in a country that your husband can visit with just his local passport and does not require a special visitor/stop-over visa for. If that's not feasible, then you will either have to apply for that special stop-over visa (as per the country's specifications) or pay out the extra bucks for the direct flight.

Good luck to you and congrats on PR!

I would contact the German consulate in his area to confirm, but from what I have read, it should not be an issue.

He would need a visa to visit Germany, but as long as he is only transiting airside at the airport, he should not have any issues. If he has only one stopover (Munich) and he does not leave the airport, he should be okay. If the stopover is more than 24 hours, then he would have a problem. Also, if for some reason, you booked a flight: Istanbul-Munich-Frankfurt-Toronto (for example), he would need a visa, as the Munich-Frankfurt flight is domestic, and thus inside the Schengen area.

Note that some countries allow people who would ordinarily require a visa to transit if they have a valid visa or residence permit in the country of destination. For example, my partner would need a visa to transit through the UK, but if she has a PR card or a TRV to Canada, then she does not need one.

Agreed.

Turkish citizens normally need a transit visa for Germany; however, if they possess a Canadian visa or PR card, they don't need a transit visa.

No visa needed. You need a visa if yo uare going to take your checked luggage when you enter Germany. If yo uhave two seperate tickets; you do need a visa.
IStanbul - Germany- Canada: Your PR card is good.

The German police officer will welcome you right at the plane and ask for your ticket to Canada. You show it and go..

Iyi yolculuklar.
