If you do a flag pole run to the USA and they stamp your passport DENY ENTRY, does this not affect further entry into US at a later time
Take a look at this thread (and many others on the topic): http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t32199.0.html

Apparently it's called an "administrative denial" and has absolutely no effect on future travel to the US.

Just curious here can I flagpole without needing to have the border stamp an entry into canada?

No. The whole point of the flagpole landing is to actually leave the country (even if for a couple seconds and only to US side of the border) and re-enter Canada. You need to give the Canada immigration officer some sort of paper or stamp from the US side, in order for them to process the landing.

If you don't want to deal with the US, you need to book a landing appointment with your local CIC and "land" in their office.

30-11-2012!
I just did flagpoling last Friday at Douglas Peach Arch, BC.

At the boarder to the US, they only gave us an orange sheet of paper, in which the officer wrote down "flagpole", then went inside showing the sheet and they did something but there was no stamp on our passport. No record whatsoever on the passport.

Then you go to Canadian boarder to land. They stamped the date of entry on my passport and signed the CoPR and the officer even gave me a little Canadian flag :)!

30 min drive (traffic was very light at 6pm rainy Friday), 30 min wait in the car to the US side, 30 min processing time at both sides (Landing process alone was less than 5 min!)

We did it Friday night so I had to go to Service Canada to renew my SIN this morning (Monday). But I could have it all done (receiving CoPR, landing, getting SIN) in a day (I live in metro Vancouver so the boarder is not far).

So, say you want to come down to the US for a day or two to do shopping or whatever. Is it necessary to stop at the US side of the border before continuing on to the Canadian side to do your landing? What is the reasoning for this? By the same token if you are currently living in the US and are coming up to land is it necessary to stop at the US side first?

No, you stop at the US side only when entering the US.

If you are already in the US going to Canada, you just go right to the Canada border.

I received my confirmation of permanent residence recently. I am also currently visiting Canada so I called the 1888-242-2100 no. For CIC and spoke to a lady to see if I can get my landing done without leaving the country.
She said she would let the local office know and that within 2 weeks I will get a call for a scheduling of an appointment to get my first landing done.

Anyone else have experience with this?

Are you anywhere near a land border? If so, you may be able to `flag pole' to land:

Friends, please help. I had my son born in Canada after I and my wife got Confirmation of Permanent Residence Letter issued. I want to go to Niagara border to finalize process, but don't know if Canadian officer will create any problem because my son not listed on the letter also he does not have passport yet only birth certificate from Ontario. Additionally, our bridging work permit expired so we can't schedule interview at CIC office. What would you suggest to do?

Your Canadian son would not be listed on the COPR. Take the child's birth certificate. You will have no issues landing.
