Hi Members,

I immigrated to Canada in July, 2017 from India. How do I show my Jan-June 2017 employment income to CRA using simpletax.ca

Would it be under "Other Foreign Income & Foreign Tax Credits" and "Line 256 deductions"? Because if I show it just under "Foreign-source income for the part of the year you weren't a resident of Canada", it doesn't show up on the tax documents. I didn't pay the full tax for my pre-Canadian residence income in India.

Any help on this would be great. Thanks!!

You only report income earned from the day you landed in Canada, so from July 2017.

I want to include my India income so as to get the LICO for this year to sponsor my parents in coming years. Since I earned a good amount from Jan-Jun of 2017, is there a way to add that to Canadian Tax return. But since I have already payed taxes in India for that period and Canada has a tax treaty with India, can I avoid paying taxes on that amount?

I know this is a question a CA can answer better, but couldn't find one who has knowledge of this.

Pretty simple: you are not allowed to do that.

As the other forum member already said: You simply can't do that. You were NOT a resident of Canada Jan-Jun which means on the first page of the tax return (= the top of the simpletax page) you have to put your July landing date and only report income starting July 2017. Only if you received Canadian source income before July do you have to (and can you) include it. But I don't think you have Canadian source income before July (Canadian source means that a Canadian company or Canadian bank must have paid you money/interest/...)
