My Wife just finished a two year course and she did not work during that period she graduated in summer 2011 and has been working full time since July 17th. She did take a student loan during her study period.

I'm worried that that she will be refused the chance to sponsor me because she hasn't been working fro a full year prior to the application (as I said she has been working since July 17th).

Can you tell me if CIC would take a negative view regarding her financial situation as a student and refuse her on that basis.

Thanks

Thx a lot for the reply, however also, with regard the situation would obtaining a co-signer make it more likely that the sponsorship will be approved?

you cannot have a so-signer in a spousal, common-law or conjugal sponsorship

Hi, I just got approved as a sponsor, and I am a student. I was unemployed for a year before we sent in the application because I was living in Germany with my partner. I had some savings, but they were limited.

This is the additional evidence I sent in showing we could support ourselves:

- A note explaining that I was a student
- A bank statement showing my savings
- A bank statement showing my partner's savings
- A pay stub showing that my partner is currently employed
- Proof that I had been applying for jobs
- A letter from my parents saying we could live with them and they would provide basic necessities if we had the need, until we got on our feet

The letter from your parents, did you get it notarized or was it just a plain letter?

Hi,
I was wondering if you had to translate to english your partner's pay stub (which I am guessing was in german?)
I am applying from the Netherlands through the Berlin embassy, and all of our pay stubs and bank statements are in dutch.
thanks.

Hoi mel_n, ik kom ook uit Nederland!

Ok, back to English. ;D

There is no minimum required income for spousal sponsorships! None. Whatsoever. As long as the sponsor is not on welfare for reasons other than disability, you're good.

My husband is a student. The application said he needed a letter from his employer saying when he got hired, how much he made and how many hours he worked, if he was employed. Since hubby is a student, and student is NOT the same as unemployed, we called CIC about it, and they suggested we substituted the employment letter with proof from his university that he is a student.

The application also said he needed his option C printout, which you need to order from Revenue Canada. Takes about 10 work days, usually less but don't bet on it. It has a lot of information on it, like whether the sponsor is on welfare other than for disability (which will be a problem if they are).

As far as I recall it didn't say anything about payment stubs, neither for him nor for me. It makes sense too:
For the sponsor, the option C printout will say it all and more. For the sponsored person, well (s)he will have to quit his/her job in order to come to Canada anyway, so I don't see whether it would matter.

If you do want to submit pay stubs/bank statements, I will tell you what we did. We simply photocopied the pay stubs or statements then made little number notations next to relevant words that were in German or needed to be explained, then on part of the page that was blank, we made a little "legend" which was like 1) account balance 2) deposit 3) withdrawal, etc. We didn't have it professionally done, since it was not actually a requested document. We also didn't have the police cert. translated (I asked the Berlin office about this, and they said we didn't have to) and there were a couple letters that were from family friends addressed to the two of us, and we didn't translate those either, just highlighted the names, showing that those friends knew we were together and were sending us letters. Everything else we had in English.

Hi every body,
I sponsored my husband and son last month. I am a returning permanent resident, and was unemployed when I applied. I have shown bank balance which I transfered from my home when I returned as the proof that I can bear expenses of my family. I also show balance in our joint account, which I will transfer when my spouse will be approved, and my income of the last two years in my home country.
Now my question is do you think I will be eligible as a sponsor?
Right now I got a part time jojb and started to work from the last week. Is there any way I can send the cop of my pay slips, or employment letter to CIC? I sent application on sept 28 and they have not yet started processing.

Is there any one who can give me advice what I should do right now?
Thanks
Amy 612

Sorry, I wasn't completely clear in my last post. There are no financial requirements for sponsoring a spouse, or a dependent child who has no dependent children of their own. Just make sure you're not on welfare, that's all. For reference, check the CIC website's family class forms page on http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp#sponsor and scroll down to the guide for sponsorship. If you open that, it's there on page 8.

Also, since you are not a citizen, I believe you have to be living in Canada to sponsor. I'm not 100% sure about that last one. But since I believe you returned before submitting the application you are fine regardless.

As far as I'm aware you don't need to inform them if you get a new job, or become unemployed. The only thing you would ever need to keep them updated on is where you live, so make sure to send them your new address if you move. You could actually even delay your application if you send them new info without them requesting it.

Indigo, it is true that there is no low income cut-off for spousal sponsorship, but you DO need to prove that you can support yourself and your spouse, without resorting to social assistance. So, if you were in a situation like me, where you don't have a ton of savings, own no property, are unemployed and a student, it is a good idea to send in additional proof that you can support yourself and have a plan for supporting yourself.

Hi

No, they do not base their decision on whether or not the sponsor is making money. I live with my parents, I haven't had a full time job yet, and I just graduated from college. I still got approved as a sponsor even though I make $0 income. I sent in a letter explaining that I am living with my parents, and that I was going to college and therefor did not have a full time job. I sent in my parents' tax information so they would know that at least my parents can support me. They accepted me, with no questions asked. I am 100% you will be accepted if this is your case. As long as you send in a letter explaining the situation, you'll be fine.

Good luck!

You don't have to explain your financial situation or justify it, or prove you can support yourselves. I spent a lot of time researching & verifying this. It says so on the sponsorship guide, on page 8:

"prove that you have sufficient income to provide basic requirements for your spouse or common-law partner‘s dependent children. To do this, you must provide documents showing your financial resources for the past 12 months. This requirement applies only when dependent children who have dependent children of their own are included on the application."
Quoted from the sponsorship guide for spouses, conjugal partners, common law partners and dependent children www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3999E.pdf

You just need to show them what your situation is at the time of applying, which you do by sending them the option C printout and a letter from your employer if you are employed. Since my hubby is a student, we sent an official letter from the university instead.

There are no income requirements to bring a spouse, or dependent child who has no dependent children of their own, to Canada. However you are not allowed to be on welfare, or go on welfare for reasons other than disability while you're applying to sponsor, are currently sponsoring or are currently being sponsored.

You do sign an undertaking (it's one of the forms) in which you promise that you will take care of basic financial needs for the person or people you are sponsoring for the duration of the sponsorship. How you do that, is basically up to you, as long as welfare is not part of it.
