They go to the website of the employer as listed on the reference letter to verify or if none listed, they perform a search on the name of the employer to locate their website. It's just one factor of many.

In my case the company I worked for was acquired and the website was shut down but still other elements of my work history were verifiable and a web search would have brought up other references to the name of the employer. Initially it triggered a review recommendation but later was passed.

Now my file also under review as my reference letter does not have my salary....which is in my offer letter.
But, on the positive note.......not many files are being rejected which are under review....I have seen only one such case in this group...

My CEC application was received on Aug 29,2013. I have received my file number on Nov 07,2013. When I ordered notes then it shows review required .I am not able to know the reason.

Was schedule 8. In schedule 8 we need to write down
The duties we performed.I only wrote 3 duties coz of
The lack of space.The VO thought i only did 3 he did not
Consider the reference letter coz its a 3rd party
Letter. This information was not provided in GCMS
Notes. Plz apply for visa notes instead of GCMS

If your file is under review required then get Visa notes/ CAIPS
it has more info.i waited for 7 months my file is under
Review status since aug 2013.so my advise to you apply the other notes.
My lawyer sent then amended schedule 8 and another letter on tuesday n
On wednesday i got medical n RPRF.
I Hope my PPR comes soon

Nice that you got your MR.....my file is also under review required status and as per the GCMS notes, it because my reference letter has no salary information. I have already joined a new company but the in good terms with the previous one. They can still provide a new reference letter for me..if I request them....do you think it will be a good idea....and BTW, the VO who is working on my file is the same one as yours..MP03299.

i got recently gcms note which is showing my file recommend passed what that mean and thay sta sifted from my work and duties and language benchmarks ...so is recommended passed mean passed ?
