After reading your post I'm suddenly more agitated about getting there. I am just waiting for approval for PR and I already feel nervous about moving to a new country. I guess, having my husband and his parents there give me a little bit of relief. But I'm worried that I will be stuck at home and won't know what to do when I arrive. Right now, I'm trying to get all the information about school and possible work and how I can prepare for it.
I hope you find some comfort knowing that you're not alone. Be strong.
BC at least is a hiker, cyclist and mountain bikers etc. paradise. We also have some of the best skiing/boarding in the world. We have lakes out the wazoo. If you like the outdoors, Canada is for you. But, in my opinion, Canada is not the most exciting country. Maybe because I've lived here too long. My main goal in life is actually to travel to many other countries.
The US has many more advantages due to their high population, but I just love the fact that I can actually go into the woods here and see no people, hear no engines. And, our Walmarts aren't crowded as hell! ;D Sure our cell phone plans are rip off, but at least you don't have to worry about someone pulling a gun on you at any moment.
Every country has their advantages and disadvantages, nowhere is perfect. There are places in the US that would scare the living daylights out of you, not so much like that in Canada. I don't even feel bad walking down East Hastings in Vancouver like I did in some places we were in, in the US. So take the good with the bad. The country is what you make of it.
As for the recession alarmist talk, well blame Harper for putting too many of our eggs into the boom and bust oil basket. Overall Canada has a ton of resources that should be used wisely, not exploited. On the world stage looking to the future, Canada is going to be a big player as we have much of the world's resources. As much as I am an environmentalist at heart, the fact remains that our land is valuable here, so we will never be that badly off.
We just need to be smart about how we use our land. Use, not exploit.
