Not sure on what basis do they select the email.
Regarding linking the application, you can check the previous post by me. I too was facing issues while linking but was able to linl after the above steps mentioned. Also note that the maximum attempt for incorrect linking is 5 after which the account gets locked for 24 hours.
This should help your to link your application.
Yes I tried using the tips you mentioned but it strangely still did not work... And I just got my account locked for 24h.
The email I received also didn't mention anything about linking the account. This is what I got:
