I've read everything the CIC gave me about the FBI clearance form, as well as the FBI's site but I am still confused. How do I go about the process?

I appreciate any advice :)

All info is here: https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks/submitting-an-identity-history-summary-request-to-the-fbi

But here is a short summary:

1) Download the checklist (https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks/identity-history-summary-request-checklist-1)
2) Download the application form (https://forms.fbi.gov/identity-history-summary-checks-review) and fill it out
3) Go get your fingerprints done on a FD-258 card. The cheapest option is your local police station. You can pay more at private fingerprinting places. If it hard to get good prints for you (dry/cracked hands, poor ridges, etc), it might be better to a private place because they have better equipment and have a stock of blank FD-258 cards. Where you got to get your prints done, you will need to show some government ID like passport or driver's license. Look at the checklist to see what the requirements are for the FD-258 card.
4) Figure out if you are going to pay the $18 (per copy) fee by certified check / money order or credit card. If it is the latter, download the credit card payment form (https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks/credit-card-payment-form) and fill it out. If by money order / certified check, make sure it is payable to "Treasury of the United States".
5) create a document that has your contact info (name, address, phone number, e-mail) and print it
6) Check the checklist to make sure you have everything. Check the boxes in the checklist
7) Get an envelope and put your completed application form, completed FD-258, payment (certified check or money order or credit card payment form), the completed checklist form, and contact document in it
8 ) mail via priority (trackable) to :

FBI CJIS Division – Summary Request
1000 Custer Hollow Road
Clarksburg, WV 26306

in any case, carefully follow the checklist. It has a summary of all the steps you need to know.

good luck

I was really confused just looking at the website too, but it ended up being easier than I expected.

First, find a place that does prints. I personally went here in Mississauga: https://www.fingerscan.ca/fbi-clearance/

I just walked in, and the staff member was very knowledgeable. She scanned my prints in a manner of minutes, printed them on the required FBI card for me, and even gave me the paperwork I needed to fill out and an envelope to mail it in! I believe it was just a one-page application form (basic info) and then the credit card form. Mail it off, and waaaaaaaaait. I sent mine in mid-April and am still waiting for the report. I really recommend you don't delay and get on it ASAP. It takes a lifetime to come back and could delay your application. Good luck!

One more question, on the FBI application it asks for the address of where the results will go. Do I put my address or the CIC's?

I have a question about FBI clearance too, if anyone knows the answer!

On the CIC website it says your FBI clearance must be done within 3 months of your PR application. Does that mean 3 months from the time the FBI sends it back to you, or 3 months from the time you sent it to the FBI? Because the processing times are so long it can take over 3 months to even get it back from them!

Your address. You are supposed to receive the result letter and include it in your application (or forward it to CIC if you already sent in your application).

Ah, thank you very much! Would it be faster if I just send in my application and then forwarded the result letter?

CIC must RECEIVE the FBI clearance letter no greater than 3 months from the date ON the letter.

btw - I read somewhere on this forum that CIC extended the timeline to 6 months. Don't know if it is confirmed however.

I have no idea as to when the time line starts but I was told to email the CIC and let them know that I was sending in my FBI form and that they needed to extend the 90 day time frame since the FBI office wait is so long.

I'm looking at the dates under your profile... did you not already submit your application Oct 14 of last year?

No, I meant your actual sponsorship application. Ok so it sounds like your sponsorship application was sent without your FBI clearance (not bad, it is common), correct?

Sorry, I mean the FBI clearance application form. And yes, it was sent without it and now it will delay everything :(
