Family Physician Applying-Should I apply for Canada Immigration or Work Permit

Hi All,

I just completed my family medicine residency from US in June 2011 and now doing my Fellowship in Family Medicine due to be completed in June 2012.

Last week I got my Job Offer letter to practice family medicine in Toronto, Ontario.

Now I have following questions?

1- Should I apply for a Permanent Residence or Temporary Work Permit?

2- If I file for Permanent Residence, what is the lead time that I will be able to receive my work authorization, prior to my staring date in July 2012?

3- My spouse is working in IT in US and he will be accompanying me. What option is suitable for me that allows my Spouse to work freely without any restrictions?

4- I know that I have to take IELTS, however does my spouse also needs to take IELTS and Labor Market Opinion Survey?

*Apply for Perm. residence under Federal skilled worker category, as soon as possible.
*Under the fast track system you and your spouse are likely to get permanent visas in less than a year. Unless there are some issues with your application. Well In time for you to start in July 12.
*You have to take IELTS and not your spouse.
*There is a cap of 500 for each occupation but you will be cap exempt since you have an offer of arranged employment.

Anyway I've already booked for the upcoming IELTS.

What documents do I need to submit to make sure that we submit all the documents in the correct fashion?

Yes , you should take IELTS.

I strongly recommend you to go by the canadian govt website. All steps are very well explained;

You will also need to apply for FBI police clearance since you are in US. Do it now , it takes about 6 weeks.
Dowload FBI fingerprint cards from this website and go to a fingerprinting agency to get your fingerprints.
Send them to FBI with fees and an application form.

Apply for police clearance from all countries where you have lived more than 6 months after the age of 18.

Should I file for work-permit and permanent immigration together or can I only file for one application at a time?

My suggestion is if you dont have any problem living in US then I dont think so it would be a wise decision to move Canada from US since you have already completed residency and you are about to start fellowship so you will get US citizenship eventually, since job situation is not good in Canada which might affect your husband. If you still wish to move to Canada its your choice.
