Hi everyone,

I visited Canada last year for 3 months to visit my boyfriend, he followed me back home for 3 months and recently we got back to Canada together.
I called the Canadian embassy to make sure visiting again wouldn't be a problem for me, and they said that I was allowed to stay up to 6 months when going back. (I don't need a visa to visit, just my passport)
At the immigration the lady immediately started questioning me about what I was doing here, and I told her that I came back to Canada to spend more time with my boyfriend and visit his family and meet his mother for the first time, and she does live quite far away from him. We had a lot of things planned in for the coming six months.
The lady only questioned me about me and my boyfriends income and savings. And with over $10k in savings together I thought there would be no problems.
In the end she gave me a three months time of allowed stay, saying I do not need six months to spend time with my boyfriend and see his family.. and that if I do not leave the country by the date she picked, I will be up for warrant.
So she stuck a paper to my passport about what my conditions are, but on the back it says I can apply for an extension of my stay, so now my question is..

Can I apply for an extension of my visitor visa? or do I have to go back home to not get a warrant..
I felt threatened and harrassed by the way she was treating me, and I'm really scared and would like some opinions, since I couldn't really find any information on CICs website on what to do.
If there is nothing to do about it ofcourse I will leave at that date, but having 6 months of planned time shortened to 3 months was somewhat heartbreaking to me as it was really unexpected.

I understand your situation - the period of stay is "usually" 6 months but it is completely up to the border officer what they deem an appropriate time of visit, since visit is a privilege and not a right. I sympathize with you though because sometime just landing in front of a grumpy border official sends you in a pile of crap for no reason - but i digress.

Yes you can definitely apply for an extension - you should do it at least a month before your allowed stay expires. Until the decision of the application comes (whether approved or denied), you'll be under "implied status" and will be legal to stay here even if the decision date takes you past the allowed period of stay.

You are required to leave at the end of three months, unless you apply for an extension. You will be under implied status for the time it takes to make a decision on the extention application.

From what you wrote, I can see the Officer's POV. You and your boyfriend have been "visiting" each other for six months and it would seem that you are trying to stay together for another six months to qualify for common-law status. This was the border agent's way of making sure that this does not happen.

You should make sure that you apply for an extension atleast 30 days prior to the depature date indicated to you by the agent.

Thank you for the replies!

I did not know about the common-law status, but if that's the case then I can see how they were thinking.

Will see how things work out from now on. Thank you once again. :)
