Hi all!

So I have been living and working in Canada for about 8 months now, only having started working 2 months ago on a contract for a year. Now my problem is that the contract exceeds the validity of my work permit by 6 months so I would have to extend it.

I have already committed to a car, restricted area passes for the airport (see my profession below), drivers license etc.

The form I used only has the following options which does not in any way clarify it to be an "extension"
-Apply for a work permit with the same employer
-Apply for a work permit the first time or with a new employer
-Restore my status as a worker
-Get a Temporary resident permit (for inadmissible applicants only)

I am working in a field relative to my experience and training (Flight Operations - and I am an experienced pilot), so I am not sure whether I just extend my open work permit or apply for a full one which is employer specific. Will that be a problem? I don't even qualify for express entry and am afraid a work permit would get denied since my company did not hire me with an LMIA.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

Short answer: IEC can't be extended.

You can ask your employer if they are willing to try the Young Professionals route. If they aren't, they certainly won't be willing to try for an LMIA, which would be your only other option.

You really shouldn't have committed to anything beyond your original one year of status.

Thanks for the info!

I considered the Young Professionals route, I think the pool opens again this November? That would be perfect.

Hi I just want to ask is it necessary to renew a new LMIA for the same employer if you want to apply a permanent residency...my working permit will be expire on April 03 and I have already 24 months working by that time....thank yoy

What are your plans after April 3rd?

Young professional program is probably the way to go. Once the new pool opens, there should be plenty of spots. Once you've got a year of work experience, you can look into the Canadian Experience Class for your Express entry.

Good luck!
