Hello,

Me and my wife are PhD students in Switzerland, and our contract says we are
assistant doctorants. We are also on work permit, not student permit. And the
listed responsibilities in our contract are:

1. He is committed to contribute to teaching and research as well as academic services activities within
the Faculty, under the supervision of Prof.-assist. XXX.
2. He is committed to collaborate within the research project on XXX conducted by XXX, and in all
related activities.
3. His commitment includes also attendance to Faculty meetings and special committees according to
instructions given by his appointed supervisor.
4. He is available for assistance to written and oral exams of the subjects with regard to one’s own
subject area, as well as, upon specific request, to other course’s exams.

So it is basically the same as University professors and lecturers in NOC-4011 terms:

We both have 3+ years of experience if we can count this as a job, do you think that it is accepted as
a regular job?

Regards,
Amanj

Work experience while studying full time doesn't count. Is there a taught portion of the PhD programme? If so, when was that completed? Is that work experience during the time you were doing your dissertation?

Hi Seniors

I worked with my present company from 2010 till 2011, then left for my Masters for a year, i then rejoined the company in 2012 with basically the same job roles but different job title. In creating my profile in EE, i added these as two different work history, i hope this is correct.

Secondly i have worked with the same manager who is prepared to provide me with a reference letter, how do you think he should write it? Does he provide two separate letters for the different years with the roles?

Please your input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help! Our PhD program is a research based program, we started working on our research from the day 1.
But we are also required to obtain some credits (12 in total), before we graduate. I think this shouldn't be considered as
full-time studying?

CIC doesn't really forbid one from using work experience gained while studying outside Canada. However, I imagine you will have to claim part-time work experience if you are simultaneously claiming full-time education because you cannot claim 2 concurrent full-time activities, by definition.

There could be another hitch - if any particular work experience is an integral part of the educational course and one engages in it purely in order to fulfill academic requirements, that might not be allowed to be counted as 'pure' full-time (or part-time) work experience for obvious reasons. I'm not entirely sure about this and CIC doesn't clarify this on their site - worth a check before applying.

Hi,
I want to ask that after my graduation(B.A)in 2011 i worked as technician in automobile dealership for 2 years.
After that i did my (ITI )in trade of mechanic motor and waiting for my final diploma in my hand.

1) So will CIC accept that before completing study of mechanic (ITI)..how did i got job of technician before ?
Or this thing does not matter to them that work experience before study..

2)kindly suggest do i need to gain work experience again for 2 years or they'll consider my experience of before ITI ?

I hope you got my point... Thnks

Thank you for the insight. Indeed the reward (the salary) that I get, for the first year is 60%, 75% for the second year, and 85% for the third year.
Now, in Canada a full-time job is considered any job with 30 or more hours per week, and in Switzerland it is 46 hours per week. Do you think
a calculation like this would be valid?

(0.60 * 46 + 0.75 * 46 + 0.85 * 46) / 3 > 30, therefore I count my work experience as 3 years (Canadian full time).

Well, teaching is not a requirement for PhD degree per se, but some universities require this as a pay back for the money that they spend on you. But, as you said I better ask before taking any actions.

Technically speaking, you wouldn't be allowed to claim any part-time work experience at the rate of more than 30 hours/week and even 30 hours/week is stretching it. A lot. And CIC wouldn't care about Switzerland's full-time hour definition. So you can't really claim (85% of 46 hours/week) as part-time.

24 hours/week appears reasonable and if you keep it there, you will get 1 year of equivalent full-time work experience in 1 years and 3 months. Extending that logic, you reach 3 years of equivalent full-time work experience in 3 years and 9 months. Of course, I have chosen 24 only to facilitate easy calculations but I imagine you should be able to use even 27 or 28 hours/week and still claim part-time work experience. It will require a nicely drafted LOE though to explain all this to the officer evaluating your file.
