Updated. Well, moves differently for different people. Only one applicant (chunka-tuna) has reported BG going to IP for a second time. All the others (apparently) received PPR after BG went to IP for the first time.

Yes CEC requires your PP to be valid for at least 6 months. My wife's PP was expiring in May 2017 and I got a mail asking for the renewed PP which is valid for at least 6 months. Since they gave me just 7 days to provide the PP I had to get it renewed urgently (tatkal application).

Since your PP Is valid fro one more year so I guess you should be fine. to get it renewed later. I am saying to wait so that in case you are asked for your PP then you wont have to ask for extension since the renewal process takes 1.5 to 2 months (at least here in Canada). Worst case if you are not able to land before the expiry of PP then you can always go for the tatkal application, it just costs more but you get it fast (my wife got it in 1 hour at the Indian consulate).

Thanks Raj & Anshul for weighing in with your opinions. Highly appreciate it. I just made a call and found out the process and timeliness for my india passport renewal here in the US. I could potentially submit for renewal and have the new PP by feb 17th (1 month - added in a couple of contingency days for delays).

Just wanted to share to check if this changes either of your opinions, based on my BG change to IP (FSW outland) on jan 17th ?

Also, based on your responses & my research, it seems like the only PP validity requirement for CIC is min. 6 months at time of PPR submission, but no requirement at time of short/permanent landing. So unless I'm way off in my understanding, i could potentially keep my current one and get it permanently renewed in Canada, if I'm lucky enough to move there later this year (lets assume september permanent move with my PP expiring in jan 2018, so < 6 months validity left)

Yea. If you are in Canada, you fall under the category "individual in Canada" AFAIK.

I crossed US border twice from Canada.

1. Stays only 4 hours to meet a friend and come back. Arrival Stamp on passport on this date and the entry slip was valid for next 6 months.
2. Stays 4 Days in NY within the mentioned six months, so no arrival stamp on passport.

I didn't mention the first travel in Travel History as I didn't spend a whole day, but I mentioned the second travel. May this cause a problem for me? Or should I inform them and correct the details.

So it's free for people living in Canada and it's not $5 for someone who is not in Canada. There is some other way to apply for gcms which costs $25 - 30.
