Hi all, I am an American living in Canada currently working on a common-law sponsorship with my (Canadian citizen) partner. Under Supporting Documents, Employment/Source of Income on the imm5589e checklist it states;

If you are working in Canada, provide an original letter from your current employer stating your period of employment, salary, and regular
hours per week or supporting financial documents if you are self-employed AND one of these documents issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
  • Your most recent Notice of Assessment. this must include line 150 (total income), or
  • proof of income statement (option c)

I'm a little confused by the way this is worded. My partner is working in Canada and not self-employed, does he still have to show a document from the CRA? Or are those documents only for if you're self-employed? Thanks!

Yes he will still need to submit a document from the CRA. Basically everyone needs to submit two documents. First either a letter from employer with hours/wage info OR financial documentation for self-employed people. Second a document from the CRA, either the NOA or Proof of Income statement.

Although there is no specific income requirement for sponsorship you need to show that you have the funds to support your family without government support. Everyone needs to provide proof of income, savings, etc. Almost all are approved and if not approved immediately most are able to provide more proof of financial support (like Canadian family members financially supporting them initially) and get approved.
