Hello there,

I have a question on EI benefits for my friend.

My friend has worked for just over a year since landing here in Vancouver, BC on PR, he is still on a PR status.
He has been made redundant and he is looking for a job for now.

Someone suggested him to apply for EI Regular benefit....& His questions are...

1) Can he apply for EI benefits ?
2) If not recommended, WHY ? Any future consequences for being on EI benefit, please ?
3) How long he has until to apply for this ? on CRA's website they suggest to apply as soon as possible.

Your input on this will help him make correct decision.

Thank you in advance,

AP.

1) Yes, he has to have a certain number of hours in the past year so if he worked for a year, he shouldn't have a problem.

2) He should apply for it. He paid into it. It's not welfare, it's like an insurance. He lost his job so he is entitled.

3) He should apply as soon as possible because the sooner he applies, the sooner he will start getting it. There is a two week waiting period after applying and then he will have to wait for his first check so he might not seen any money for 4 weeks after he applies.

Hello Leon,

Many thanks for your quick reply and info.

Much appreciated buddy.

AP.

There's an online form to fill out that takes an hour, you have to have worked 600 hrs prior to applying and get ROE's from all your previous employers. Then you have to file an EI report every 2 weeks while you get benefits to prove you can't find a job.

hi iwas appay Ei by online appalacaion alrey 20 days still i did nit get paymen or any mail from servie canaa i saw 28 dys it is business days ?

Please start a new topic rather than re-opening a 5 year old post. Depending on the severance you received from your employer, EI can take substantially longer than 28 days. EI will deduct the severance from your EI payments until they calculate the amount is consumed. So if you receive the maximum $547/wk and receive $5,000 severance, that will delay paying your claim an additional 9 weeks.
