Sonea may be this question seem odd to you, but I am concerned with this...what is the trend of dressing in Edmonton???I mean if we wear our national dresses like shalwar kameez (especially females), and go to work, will people look down upon us???will it look odd or abnormal to work in our traditional outfit rather than western dresses???

There are many Indian and Pakistani people here and women tend to wear shalwar kameez its perfectly fine .. But Not at work they have to follow company's dress code which is pant and shirt .. For styling you can visit sears.ca website for latest trends and fashion

Hi guys. . .new to this thread. . we are planning to land in Edmonton on the 25 June. . I have this query. . .

Im holding UAE driving license and I read that once you arrived you need to forward your UAE driving license and the experience letter issued by Dubai RTA to UAE embassy in Ottawa for NOTARIZATION (cost :CAD 50, processing time 3-5 business days) in order to be exempted to GDL program

Is this the real process. . hope for your response. . .thanks in advance. .

First of all check with your airline for how much weight you can carry in your baggage I think it's not much and you can only fit clothings and a few things within your weight limit..

You should bring appropriate clothing, bring some bed sheets (queen size), towels, and a big sauce pan (to cook large meals like biryani) as its quite expensive here at the desi stores and Canadian stores don't have that kind of large saucepans.. you will find tawa, table ware, quilts, pillows etc at low prices at Walmart so don't stuff your baggage with these things.

All kind of spices national and shan masalay are available here so u dont need to bring them along
very practical piece of advice .you always specific

Yes, attestation is required. I know of someone who submitted license and experience letter to UAE embassy in Canada. It was returned promptly after attestation. CAD 50 fee were returned too. Visitors can drive in Canada with the driving license of their country, for period of one month. I am not sure whether this holds good for immigrants, as well. There is no requirement of international license.
I got experience letter from RTA, Dubai 2 weeks back. The lady who issued the letter informed me that for Alberta, attestation is required from Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I got this done. One has to pay fee of AED 160. Their office is in Bur Dubai, near Indian Consulate. Hopefully, i won't be required to get it attested by UAE embassy - if better sense prevails.

One of the things just occurred to me that, although it may sound stupid, is it wise to land in weekdays or weekend?

Any day you get a flight for, advantages of weekdays are that you can quickly do you paper work such as apply for SIN card medical card and open a bank account ASAP etc but on weekends you can do house hold shopping only but not these type of official work because all banks and offices are closed on weekend
Save your time and start your work from day one

Is it easy to move around through public transport like going for SIN, medical, bank, to and from work etc etc?

I have heard that renting an apartment is difficult for new immigrants as landlords ask for credit history etc. What would you say about that?

It's not like that you will find all type of landlords some wouldn't want kids at their property some would like to know about your previous rentals etc.. They ask you for a deposit money which is equal to one month's rent which is refundable is you have not don't any damages to the property, paid electric bill and have completed your rent term as mentioned in your agreement.. Deposit money can be equal to or less but can't be more than a month's rent. you and the landlord will sign a tenancy agreement and all your and landlords rights and responsibilities will be mentioned in it so no chance of insecurity at either side ..

Hi Sonea, just a generalized question, how do you like it there in Edmonton/Canada over all
how does it compares to from where you moved there from, one year down the line
what do you think, over all are you very well satisfied with the move/migration
