What are concession fares?
Concession fares are competitive air fares with additional benefits as negotiated by IOM with a wide variety of airline partners worldwide.
What are the main benefits?
The main benefits of concession fares are:
1. Preferential air fares
2. Special individual and group booking conditions
3. Increased baggage entitlement
4. Simplified payment procedures
IOM-assisted passengers can also benefit from transit assistance at departure and arrival points and transit visa waiver arrangements at selected transit locations where these arrangements have been implemented.
What advantage do I have in using IOM transportation assistance over those of a travel agency for my resettlement or emigration?
IOM offers competitive fares, often well below or on par with locally available market fares with the added advantage of most fares being less restrictive (for instance, possibility of rebooking or even cancellation* without penalty), higher baggage allowance and transit assistance where available.
Who can benefit from IOM’s transportation assistance?
Officially recognized refugees in possession of proper documentation, migrants, students and other travellers who fall under a wide category of IOM programmes such as resettlement and returns are eligible for travel under IOM auspices on a temporary or permanent basis.
• Scholarship holder programmes
• Agricultural programmes
• Return of Qualified Nationals
• Resettlement programmes
• Special assistance programmes to developing countries, including programmes of technical co-operation with governments.
Does IOM charge a service fee?
Yes, there is a service fee which varies. Please contact IOM's Operational Support Unit (OSU) at osu@iom.int.
Why are the concession fares not indicated on the IOM website?
In addition to the confidential nature of the negotiated agreements with various airlines, the fares vary according to availability of booking class, seasonality, validity and suitability of routing/itinerary.
From a specific departure point to a specific destination point, there could be a number of choices available. Please contact the OSU Unit (osu@iom.int) for the fare and routing details suitable to your location.
Can IOM assist me in securing a visa for my country of resettlement?
No, IOM-assisted passengers have to acquire their own visas and other relevant travel documentation before approaching IOM for the transportation arrangements. However in some locations and for some destinations, IOM can assist in the application documentation for a service fee.
Other than a national passport, what other type of travel documents are acceptable for travel?
Before departure, migrants and refugees must be in possession of the following documents:
• Passport or Travel Document: A valid national passport or other type of travel document (e.g., ICRC or UN travel documents) on which the entry visa to the resettlement country can be affixed. In the absence of any of these documents, the concerned embassies and High Commissions may issue a travel document valid for a single journey as appropriate for their requirements.
• Entry visa or permanent residence visa
Does IOM assistance include the provision of escorts for special cases?
Medical and non-medical escorts may be needed to assist in specific individual and group departures, up to the port of entry or to the final destination in the country of destination.
Non-medical cases: In some circumstances, unaccompanied minors, elderly refugees or particularly vulnerable persons may require the services of a non-medical escort. In such instances, the IOM office at the point of origin makes available an experienced staff member to accompany the refugee to the destination agreed upon with the destination country.
Medical cases: The conditions for transportation of sick and incapacitated passengers are subject to the rules and regulations of each air carrier involved. Please click here for more details on the requirements for medical cases.
What is the payment procedure?
Payments to IOM for IOM reduced fares shall be made through a bank transfer or a bank deposit. Only in countries where such bank services do not exist may the collection be made in cash.
Will IOM pay for my ticket?
No, IOM will give you access to special reduced fees but cannot pay or subsidize your journey.
Who do I contact?
The Movement Management Department (MMD) based at the IOM Headquarters in Geneva has overall responsibility for all movement aspects worldwide. Within MMD, the Operations Support Unit (OSU) is the focal point for air fares, baggage allowance, transit, airline agreements and all other transport related issues.
Requests are either dealt by OSU directly or channelled by the Unit to the concerned IOM field office.
