Dual Citizen Looking to Move to Canada

I was born in Canada (Newfoundland in 1963) to American parents while my father was serving in the US Air Force.

I have a Canadian-issued birth certificate, and a very detailed "Record of Birth Abroad" document issued by the US State Department. About a month ago, I applied for a Canadian Certificate of Citizenship. Based on everything I have read, I should be eligible to be a "certified" Canadian citizen.

I do have a few questions:

1.) The Canada.com website says that the time frame for issuing a Canadian Certificate of Citizenship is typically about 5 months. Does that sound right?

2.) Assuming I get certification of my Canadian citizenship, I would like to be able to move to Canada with my wife and 22 year old son. I work for an international company with operations in Canada. Would I need a work permit to work in Canada, or would all I need is a letter from my employer stating that I have a job in Canada?

3.) Assuming I get certification of my Canadian citizenship, would my US-born son have to apply for citizenship, or would he already be a Canadian citizen based on descent from a Canadian parent?

Thanks in advance for any info.

1) Yes

2) With a certificate you request a Canadian passport and move to Canada whenever you want. No permits, no letters, no questions asked.

3) Yes, since you were born in Canada your son is probably a Canadian citizen by descent, so you can request a citizenship certificate for him. About your wife you would need to apply to sponsor her.

See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp

You don't need to wait for your citizenship certificate. Your Canadian birth certificate is proof of citizenship. You can use it to get a Canadian passport if you like. You can also get a SIN card and work in Canada right now. You do not need a work permit. Your son is also a Canadian citizen, but because he was born outside of Canada, he will need to apply for a citizenship certificate, which he can do right now...no need to wait for yours to arrive. As to your wife, you will need to sponsor her for permanent residence.

As alphazip said, you don't require a Certificate of Citizenship. You can use your Canadian birth certificate to apply for a passport.

You should start the sponsorship process for your spouse. American apps average 4-6 months.

I'm actually more interested at this time to certify my son's Canadian citizenship. He already has a US passport.

When I have him apply for his Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, wouldn't it be better/easier if I already have my Canadian Certificate of Citizenship that I can submit on his behalf as a primary supporting document?

Or doesn't it matter as long as I can send in a copy of my Canadian Birth Certificate and a copy of my "Record of Birth Abroad" documents?

I was thinking it would be easier/better to submit a copy of my Certificate of Canadian Citizenship when he applies for his.

Both documents show you are a Canadian citizen. Neither is stronger proof of citizenship. All your son needs is your birth certificate.

There really was no need for you to apply for a Certificate of Citizenship.

Exactly. Citizenship certificates are only required by people born outside of Canada. People born here in Canada don't generally have them.

If you mean your American record of birth abroad, you don't need to send that with your son's application. You just need to send an original or certified copy (see list of states where a notary can certify a "true copy" here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certified_copy) of his birth certificate and your Canadian birth certificate.

Not only no reason, but you probably won't even get a citizen certificate due tonhaving. A Canadian birth certificate. My spouse and one child were born out of Canada so have citizen certa. Another child was born in and has just birth certificate.

They will give a Certificate of Citizenship to any Canadian that applies for one, even if they have a Canadian birth certificate.

Your father didn't have some kind of diplomatic status did he, like a defence attache or something?
