Dual Citizen Looking to Move to Canada

About two months ago, I requested and received an updated copy of my Newfoundland birth certificate directly from the province office, as my original was not in the best condition. I also ordered an extra copy so I can archive one of them and use the other as a "working" copy.

I feel pretty sure that I will receive my Certificate of Citizenship in the next few months. In the meantime, I will use my newly issued Newfoundland birth certificate to apply for a Certificate of Citizenship for my son, and to get Canadian passports for both of us. It appears that I can do all of this concurrently.

I will also begin the process to sponsor my wife for citizenship.

One last question. Once I get my Canadian passport, I plan to take a trip to Toronto. Should I apply for an SIN for me and my son while I am in Canada and can do it in person? It looked like all I would need to be issued an SIN is a Canadian passport.

You will be sponsoring your wife for PR, not citizenship.

You can apply for your SIN whenever you want. It only takes a few minutes, so it's not something that really needs to be sorted out ahead of time. Your son is an adult and needs to apply for his own.

You can use your birth certificate to get a passport, but your son will have to wait for his citizenship certificate to arrive before he can get a passport. To get a SIN, you would use your birth certificate; your son would use his citizenship certificate. As I was told at a Service Canada office (the place where SINs are applied for), a Canadian passport is a travel document, not proof of citizenship! This seems contrary to the situation in the U.S., where a passport IS considered proof of citizenship.

Remember that any documents you send off to IRCC, like that newly issued birth certificate, will NOT be returned.
