Hi every one,

I read that people holding a driving license from UK can simply exchange it with Canadian one.

The question is if someone hold a British license of Category B auto (which is only for *automatic* cars), is there any equivalent license in Canada.
In other words, is there license for automatic cars only or I need to have general license to be able to exchange it ?

Thanks for your help in advance.

I believe that we can indeed swap ours straight over; make sure you bring both parts of the licence. It was very straight forward here in Alberta.

You might want to use the following link to check your province of destination (the rules can vary):
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/united_kingdom-royaume_uni/consular_services_consulaires/driving-conduire.aspx?lang=eng

I'm actually pretty surprised to even hear we have an automatic only licence in the UK! There's isn't an equivalent licence in Alberta (category 5 is all cars), but considering almost all cars in Canada are automatic, I highly doubt you will have a problem.

Yes, you can exchange it.

I simply exchanged my German driver's license here in Québec. No issues, no test, nothing. They even let me keep my German driver's license (even though I know that in e.g. BC they seize it), so now I have two.

Since everyone drives automatic shift here, you do not need a "special" driver's license for cars with manual shift in North America. They don't make any difference in that matter (yes, you can simply buy a car with manual shift here and just drive it even though you have no clue how it works - crazy, eh?)

"If this country appears in the following list, and if you hold a valid licence, you are eligible for a Class 5 driver's licence exchange without proficiency examinations as these countries have entered into agreements with Québec regarding the exchange of a driver's licence. However, you must pass the required tests if your wish to obtain a licence authorizing you to drive a motorcycle (Class 6):

Austria
Belgium
France
Germany
Great Britain: England, Scotland, Wales
Isle of Man
Japan
Netherlands (The): Holland, Dutch Antilles (St. Martin, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Sabat and St. Eustache)
Northern Ireland
Republic of Korea (South Korea)
Switzerland
Taiwan"

I know that the other provinces have the very same agreement with those countries listed above. Some of my friends did the same thing in BC, Alberta and Ontario. I hope this helps! ;)
