Good morning All!

My husband and I are applying inland he is out of status from a work visa. In the interim is my husband able to apply for his drivers license? he does not hold a valid drivers license from Jamaica nor has he ever had a drivers license in Jamaica or any other country. But we were wondering if it were possible for him to apply in the meantime? the Service Ontario website shows a list of supporting documents he could use to obtain a G1 which does include a valid foreign passport which he has. Any ideas on if it is possible for him to apply?

thank you so much for the reply!
No problem. Just go to the DMV or a place that issues the G1 tests and you're on your way :)

What if I go to Canada as a visitor to wait my PR can I get canadian driver's licence? I've had my licence in Finland already for 10 years.. well, I guess that doesn't matter in this. ;)

I know that I can drive with foreign licence for 3 months.. but it's not going to be enough. It would be nice to drive there.. :)

Funny thing is, I had a friend with a Dutch drivers license that has Dutch and English on it, so it was obvious what it said on there. They still required her to translate it! And after all of that she found out she can not use it. So yes, you can get your G1, but you can not drive a car with a G1, only with someone who has had their full G for I believe 5 years. In Canada you get your G1 first which is a written test, then after I believe a year, you can get your G2 which is a driving test and once you get that, you can drive a car by yourself. Then after a while you can apply for a G, this means you can have a G1 driver drive with you.

From what I know, any one can get their drivers license in Canada. As long as you show a certain amount of ID, eg; foreign passport, birth certificate, foreign ID card, etc.

Hope this helps!

Side note : maybe if you mention to them that you have been driving in Finland for ten years they will let you take your g2 right after you do your g1. Doesn't hurt to ask!! :)

Nice! How weird are the cops there. Police has ever asked my licence in Canada so I don't know if they would need me to translate it.. there is everything in english as well also. :)

This helps, thanks a lot! Maybe I'll go to Service Canada and ask more when I get to Canada. :)

Yeah, I actually read it somewhere that if you've had a licence for certain time you don't need wait as long to take G2. I just need to prove that I've had licence for that long. :D
