I have an international drivers license, valid for 10 more years, and I am on implied status (since November 2013).
Work visa and young professionals ran out in Novemebr 2013 and my sponsorship is being processed since then.
ICBC cannot help (because they know nothing) and I cannot get through to immigration for questions.

- Is my drivers license still valid until I get my PR or will my car get impounded, I get a hefty fine and get thrown in prison :)?

Thanks in advance

A very quick search of the ICBC website turns up that you can drive in BC for up to 90 days with an out-of-province on International Drivers license. After which you are supposed to obtain a BC drivers license

Since I can;t post links here, just google "ICBC foreign license"

the first result will take you to the information you need

You need to provide a valid immigration (status) document to ICBC, as your primary piece of I.D., so if you only have `implied status', they may not accept that.

Thanks for the answer.

Different question: Is it a rumour or true that if I cross provincial borders for example BC to Alberta, stay a day and come back to BC, that I can use my drivers license for 90 days again?

I applied for a visitor extension (I'm from visa-exempt country) and was able to use that to get a BC Driver's Licence.

The extension costed $100 and was very straightforward. Waited about 6 weeks to get it.

Interesting thread!

I've been meaning to ask, when you apply for a bc license,do you get to keep your home country license or do they take it?

Can't speak for BC but in Ontario my wife kept her foreign license.
They are the property of foreign governments by definition, I'm not sure any other country has the right to confiscate them.

My wife's NJ licence was taken when she swapped the licence for Ontario. I asked them why she has to give them up. The reply was "they are New Jersey's property, thus need to be returned".

What form did you use to apply for a visitor extension? I'm currently here on a work permit that expires in June, and can't apply for PR until approximately April, so I'll need to extend my stay as a visitor. I can't figure out what forms to use!

Go to this page: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp and follow the instructions. It's processed faster if you apply online.
