I landed today to become a PR.
The CIC officer told me that ,incase I am interested in becoming a citizen, the citizenship eligibility rule will very likely change anytime soon.
So far you needed soandso many days in Canada(sorry I dont have the exact number but Im sure you all know what Im talking about) the days before you became PR counting as half days, and needed to be in Canada 3 out of the last 5 years.
Now it will very likely change to :
You need to be in Canada 5 out of 6 years and the days before you gained your PR status will NO LONGER count. Plus the fees to apply for citizenship will DOUBLE!

I thought some of you might find this information useful. If you are debating wether to apply now or later,Id suggest you do it now before it changes and you may no longer be eligible.

Thanks for sharing but people in this forum have gone far ahead in researching this information since last year already.

Congratulations Spikey92 on Landing today and your PR!

Thank you for the update about the new eligibility requirements for Citizenship, as this is news to me.
I am still going through the PR process, have lived here in Canada with my spouse since 2010, and I've just started to gather information for Citizenship.

Congratulations Spikey! Thank you for taking your time and sharing this information with us. Yes, some of the people here already know about this proposed changes. It is always good to hear it from an Immigration Officer. You take care.

I too wonder why the other member asked you 'How good is your German'...

Cheers

You could be right and it could be 4/5 or 6, I was so excited about my PR I might have not listened this carefully.
I was moreso shocked by the fact, that the days before you became PR would no longer count.
I spent almost three years in Canada as temp. Worker /visitor so that would have been 1,5 years for me and Im sure some people have even more, so thats kinda unfortunate that they will probably change it.

It's actually more complex than that... http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/releases/2014/2014-02-06.asp and http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/releases/2014/2014-02-06a.asp

As a result of these amendments, applicants will need to be physically present in Canada for a total of four out of their last six years. In addition, they would need to be physically present in Canada for 183 days per year for at least four of those six years.

No it would have been just 1 year. You can only count up to two years at half a day under the current laws. Not a big difference I know.

Going with my own experience I can only say that time flies by so fast....have been wanting to apply years ago but just never got to it. And if the new laws will make the whole process faster then believe me you will not mind either ;)
