Does my wife require a visitor record?

Hi guys,

I need some expert advice. My wife came here (in Alberta) a couple of weeks ago on a visitor visa but her passport was not stamped. When we went to apply for her health card, we were asked to produce her visitor record or the stamp which we didn't have. We are planning to apply for her PR in a couple of weeks.

My query is if it is advisable to apply for Visitor record straight after we apply for her spouse visa and work permit? My understanding is we should be able to meet the health care card requirement once she gets the work permit. Moreover, the timeline to get a visitor record and open work permit is almost same.

Also, is my understanding correct that once we apply for the spouse visa, she will get the implied status and we won't have to apply for her visa extension. Thanks for reading and any suggestion

Not really any point in applying for a Visitor Record.

She won't have Implied Status from submitting the PR app. She has valid status as a visitor for 6 months. If she receives the OWP before that 6 months is up, she will have status as a worker. If the OWP hasn't been approved by the time the 6 months is up, she will have Implied Status after that.

Great, thanks for the clarification. Actually, we are trying to get the Alberta Health care card as soon as possible as my wife is pregnant. So trying finding a quickest possible route.

Can I ask one more thing please? How long does it normally takes to get the "first positive decision?" My understanding is we should be able to apply for the Health care card based on that as well. thanks

Approval in Principle doesn't come until the end of the process.

Thanks. So can you please suggest what should be my plan of action? Should I wait for the work visa approval then? That is around 4 months, right? Or is there any other wayout? Thanks again for your time

Generally 3-4 months. Not really any other way.
